Carlos Mayans (born July 8,1948) became mayor of the city of Wichita,Kansas in April 2003. [1] He was born in Havana,Cuba in 1948 and emigrated to the United States through the Operation Peter Pan shortly after the Cuban Revolution of 1959. [2] In addition to serving as mayor,Mayans also served as a Republican representative for Wichita's 100th district in the Kansas House of Representatives for five terms [1] and ran an insurance agency before becoming mayor. [3] He lost a re-election bid for mayor to Carl Brewer by 61% to 37% in 2007. [4]

The Heartland Flyer is a daily passenger train that follows a 206-mile (332 km) route between Oklahoma City,Oklahoma,and Fort Worth,Texas. It is operated by Amtrak and jointly funded by the states of Oklahoma and Texas. The train's daily round-trip begins in Oklahoma City in the morning and reaches Fort Worth in the early afternoon. It leaves Fort Worth during the afternoon rush for an evening return to Oklahoma City. As of November 2014,the train is scheduled at 3 hours 58 minutes in each direction. Future plans call for the train's northern terminus to be extended from Oklahoma City to Newton,Kansas,with additional frequency along the original route.

The Wichita State Shockers football team was the college football program of Wichita State University in Wichita,Kansas. The Shockers fielded a team from 1897 to 1986. They played their home games at Cessna Stadium and were members of the Missouri Valley Conference until the program was discontinued. The team was known as Fairmount from its first season in 1897 to 1925 and Wichita from 1926 through 1963.
