Carlos Xavier Rabascall Salazar (born September 3, 1960) is an Ecuadorian journalist, commercial engineer, businessman, and political consultant who is running for President of Ecuador in the 2025 general election. He previously ran for vice president in the 2021 general election.
Rabascall was born in Guayaquil on September 3, 1960 [1] into a middle-class family. [2] Because of the effects of the drug called Thalidomide, which affected the formation of the newborn, he was born without a leg, a situation that generated a "hard childhood because of discrimination" he explained later. [2]
Rabascall completed his basic training at Colegio La Salle and later graduated as a commercial engineer at the Universidad Católica de Santiago de Guayaquil. He has also taken courses in Finance at IDE and participated in the Governance and Political Management Program of the Catholic University of Guayaquil under the auspices of George Washington University. [3]
In 2017, he was a member of the Front for Transparency and the Fight Against Corruption, a body in charge of proposing policies to prevent corruption in the public and private sectors. In December 2020, it was confirmed that he was part of the Union for Hope coalition together with Andrés Arauz, in the Ecuadorian presidential elections.
In July 2024, Rabascall registered as a pre-candidate for President of Ecuador in the upcoming 2025 general election. [4]
Sixto Alfonso Durán-Ballén Cordovez was an Ecuadorian political figure and architect. He served as Mayor of Quito between 1970 and 1978. In 1951, he co-founded a political party, the Social Christian Party. In 1991, he left the Social Christian Party and formed a new conservative group, the Republican Union Party (PUR), before running for president for the third time in 1992.

General elections were held in Ecuador on 7 February 2021, established by the National Electoral Council (CNE) as the date for the first round of the presidential election and a vote on mining in Cuenca. Incumbent president Lenín Moreno, who had held the office since his victory over Guillermo Lasso in 2017, did not seek reelection. Although delaying the election due to the COVID-19 pandemic was discussed, the CNE announced on 15 December 2020 that the electoral calendar would not shift and confirmed elections would take place in February 2021.

Snap general elections were held in Ecuador on 20 August 2023 to vote for President of Ecuador, members of the National Assembly and two referendums. Elections followed the invocation of muerte cruzada, which dissolved the National Assembly on 17 May 2023. A run-off election was held on 15 October 2023 to elect the President after candidates were unable to reach the threshold needed to win in the first round. Incumbent president Guillermo Lasso was eligible for a second term, but he announced on 18 May that he would not stand for re-election in response to his impeachment.
