Carlos Segundo (born in 1979) is a Brazilian filmmaker. He is mostly knows for his feature debut Slits (2019), his short film Big Bang (2022) [1] and his Oscar-shortlised [2] short film Sideral (2021). [3] [4] [5]

Life and career

He was born in São Paulo, Brazil. He teaches Audiovisual Arts in the Department of Social Communication at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). [6] He also curates festivals, exhibitions and workshops. [7] In 2009 he founded the production company 'O sopro do tempo'. [8] [9]

Segundo holds a master's degree in psychoanalysis and cinema (2011) from the Federal University of Uberlândia and a doctorate in cinema (2016) from Unicamp. [10] [7]

He is currently working on his second feature, Milk Powder, which received the Hubert Bals Fund and is co-produced by O sopro do tempo, Les Valseurs and Black Forest. [11]

Recognition

His short film Sideral (2021) was nominated at Cannes for the Palme d'Or Award [7] and shortlisted for the 95th Academy Awards under the category Best Live Action Short Film. [13] His short film Big Bang (2022) has been awarded with for the Golden Leopard for Best Auteur Short Film at the 75th Locarno International Film Festival. [14]

Juliana Rojas is a Brazilian filmmaker who was born in Campinas, São Paulo. She graduated in Cinema in Escola de Comunicação e Artes da USP where she met fellow Brazilian filmmaker Marco Dutra. This was the beginning of a long partnership between them. In 2004, while still in school, they codirected a short film called Lenço Branco. Their short film was part of a section of the Cannes Film Festival that is dedicated to university films, Cinéfondation. Three years later, in 2007, Um Ramo, another short film directed by Rojas and Dutra, would be nominated to Semaine de la Critique of Cannes Film Festival. In 2011, her first feature film would be premiered in the Festival, in the "Un Certain Regard" section. Her film, Good Manners was nominated in 2017 at the Locarno Film Festival. She has also worked as an editor.

Kantemir Arturovich Balagov is a Russian film director of Circassian descent, screenwriter and cinematographer from the Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, in the North Caucasian region of the Russian Federation. He has directed the films Closeness (2017) and Beanpole (2019).

The short has been presented in a number of festivals, including Cannes Film Festival and the Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival and won several awards, including the Oscar Qualifying award for Best International Short at the 2022 Palm Springs International Shorts Fest.

How Do You Measure a Year? is a 2021 American short documentary film directed by Jay Rosenblatt. The documentary film is about father-daughter relationship. The title comes from lyrics of the track "Seasons of Love" of the 1996 Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Rent. The film is nominated for 95th Academy Awards in Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Film category. It was also screened in August 2021 at 74th Locarno Film Festival.
