Carlota Alfaro (born June 4, 1933) is a high fashion designer. [1] She is known as "Puerto Rico's grande dame of fashion". [2]

Biography

Alfaro was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico and showed a passion for design ever since she was a child, often designing clothes for family and friends. She was raised in Santurce where her aunt taught her how to sew.

Alfaro reached international fame in Latin America, Europe and the United States during the 1960s, decade in which she also created the Instituto Carlota Alfaro, [3] aimed towards passing on her knowledge to young fashion design students. Alfaro's specialty is haute couture. [4] During the 1980s, she published a series of designs in a local newspaper's fashion column, called Destellos de la moda. Her signature dress is the exaggerated mermaid cut.

Alfaro has received many international awards, and her collections have been sold at stores around the world, including Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales and Saks Fifth Avenue. [2]

Milagros Benet de Mewton was a Puerto Rican educator, women's rights advocate and suffragist. Born into an intellectual, liberal family, Benet trained as a teacher. Inhabitants of the island gained U.S. citizenship in 1917, two decades after the United States acquired Puerto Rico from Spain in the Spanish–American War. Benet was active in the struggle for women's enfranchisement and joined the first suffragist organization Liga Femínea Puertorriqueña that year. When U.S. women gained the right to vote with the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1919, Benet led the push to extend its coverage to Puerto Rico. In 1924, she filed a lawsuit challenging the right of the electoral board to refuse to register women as they were U.S. citizens. The Supreme Court of Puerto Rico ruled that states and territories have the right to determine who can vote and denied her claim.
