Carmine Cirella (born January 16, 1960) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player.

Playing for the Peterborough Petes, he won the 1979 Memorial Cup. [1]

Professional career

He was drafted 108th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft. [2] He never played in the National Hockey League, but played 283 games in the American Hockey League. His career was split between playing for the Adirondack Red Wings and the Maine Mariners. [3] [4] He also won the Calder Cup twice. [5] [6]

He achieved his greatest success in Calgary, where he was named a second team All-Star in 1987–88, played in the 1988 NHL All-Star Game and won the Plus-Minus Award with a league leading total of +48. In 1989, he helped the Flames win their only Stanley Cup championship. His career plus-minus of +444 is the 10th highest total in NHL history, and the highest among players not inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Cornwall won their second Memorial Cup, defeating Peterborough in the final game.

The 1986–87 Detroit Red Wings season saw the Red Wings finish in second place in the Norris Division (NHL) with a record of 34 wins, 36 losses, and 10 draws for 78 points, a 38-point improvement from the previous season. They swept the Chicago Blackhawks in four games in the opening round, then rallied from a 3-1 deficit against the Toronto Maple Leafs in the division final, before falling to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Edmonton Oilers in five games in the conference final. This season would mark a turning point for the franchise. After making the playoffs just four times between 1967 and 1986, the Red Wings would miss the playoffs only once between 1987 and 2016.
