Prescott, Arizona, founded in 1864, soon had a children's library that was a collection of books gathered by several women. A Prescott Library Association opened a public reading room space in 1870. But there was no regularly funded library until the Carnegie library (a free public library) at 125 E. Gurley Street was built in 1903. Its funding and construction was a project of the Monday Literary Society or Monday Club, a group formed in 1895 (as the Women's Club of Prescott), a group of women dedicated to the educational and cultural well-being of their community. [2] It has also been known as Prescott Public Library and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places under that name. The replacement library, the current Prescott Public Library, built in 1974, is two blocks away.

In 1864 Prescott was designated as the capital of the Arizona Territory, replacing the temporary capital at Fort Whipple. The Territorial Capital was moved to Tucson in 1867. Prescott again became the Territorial Capital in 1877, until Phoenix became the capital in 1889.

The Monday Club requested matching funds from Andrew Carnegie to build the library. The goal was to create a ‘free public library’ for the Prescott community. In July 1889, Carnegie agreed to fund $4,000 with the understanding the other $4,000 would be raised by the Prescott community. [2] The Monday Club achieved its goal and a building lot was granted. However, a fire in July 1900 destroyed the books for the anticipated library. [2] The Monday Club accepted donations for replacement books and pressed on. [2] [3] In November 1903, the library opened, [3] situated near Marina and Gurley in Prescott, Arizona. [4] It was the first public library in the area. [4]

Dear Sir,
Your well known philanthropy has prompted me to appeal to you in the interest of a truly charitable work. In our little town of 3500 inhabitants, we have after much effort and work established a library of nine hundred volumes—good readable books in good condition, but we have no endowment, rents are high, and we have been compelled to charge for the tickets. It is our aim and hope to make the library free and to maintain a free reading room. In no place could such a room be more needed than in Prescott with its large floating population of young men, many of whom can not afford to keep their own rooms lighted and heated, and therefore have no recourse but the saloons and “dives” for there are no innocent amusements in the town. If we could get an endowment of $10,000 or even $8,000, we would at once, make the library free, for all the women on the library committee are willing to work very hard to keep the matter in good shape, to raise money to buy new books and to subscribe for periodicals. I truly believe that the amount of money I mention would do greatest good in this way than in any other. I have tried to write briefly so as not to demand too much of your valuable time, but if you are interested to investigate the matter, I shall taker pleasure in giving you all the information possible. I am privileged to refer to the Governor of the Territory, Hon. N. Oakes Murphy, Phoenix, Arizona, who will tell you I am sure that the library is in capable hands. Carnegie responded in 1899 with an offer of $4,000, conditional upon the people of Prescott matching that sum. The existing library collection was lost in a 1900 conflagration that burned much of downtown Prescott, but a $1800 insurance claim was paid for the loss, and other fundraising eventually raised enough to meet Carnegie's condition. Builders Maxwell & Sines constructed the library for $8,242. It was opened with 1300 volumes on November 24, 1903. Ownership was passed from the Monday Club to the city of Prescott in 1917. [5]

The library served the Prescott community until 1974 when the current Prescott Public Library opened. [2]

General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen of the City of New York

The General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen of the City of New York, was founded on November 17, 1785, by 22 men who gathered in Walter Heyer's public-house on Pine Street in Lower Manhattan. The aims of the General Society were to provide cultural, educational and social services to families of skilled craftsmen. The General Society during this early period celebrated the mutuality and centrality of the craft community. Besides its charitable activities, the society played a prominent part in the festivities that marked patriotic holidays, carrying banners emblazoned with its slogan 'By hammer and hand all arts do stand', echoing the motto of the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths.

The Pima County Public Library (PCPL) system serves Pima County, Arizona with a main library and 26 branch libraries as well as bookmobile service. The system has its headquarters in Tucson. The service area includes the city of Tucson and the surrounding communities of Arivaca, Green Valley, Sahuarita, South Tucson, Ajo, Vail, Marana, Casas Adobes, and Catalina. The town of Oro Valley's library joined the Pima County Public Library system in July 2012.

Fort Fairfield Public Library

The Fort Fairfield Public Library, located at 339 Main Street, is the public library of Fort Fairfield, Maine, USA. Fort Fairfield had a private library as early as 1880. It became a town-supported library in 1894 with a circulation of 300 books. In 1911 the town received a grant of $10,000 from Andrew Carnegie - making it one of the seventeen Carnegie libraries in the state of Maine. The building was designed by Lewiston architect Harry Coombs, and built by R.J. Noyes of Augusta. The Fort Fairfield Public Library was completed and officially opened on September 9, 1913.

When Tyler built a new public library, the Carnegie building was leased to the Smith County Historical Society and continues to operate as a museum and archives.

The Carnegie Library in Guthrie, Oklahoma, is a building at 406 East Oklahoma Avenue. Constructed in 1901, It was the second Carnegie-funded library built in Oklahoma and the oldest one still in existence. The Guthrie library opened on May 20, 1903, It remained Guthrie's main library until 1972, when the city decided to tear it down and build a new facility in its place. Fred Pfeiffer, a local philanthropist, offered to fund a new structure next door to the Carnegie Library, if the old building were kept intact. The city accepted his offer, and gave the building to the Oklahoma Historical Society. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. The old building is now part of the Oklahoma Territorial Museum. Oklahoma Territorial Museum opened Nov. 13, 1973.

Chariton Public Library public library in Iowa

Chariton Public Library is located in Chariton, Iowa, United States. The Library and Reading Room Association was formed in Chariton in 1879, but it was short-lived. The county superintendent of schools started a teachers' library in the courthouse sometime afterward. By this time the community had a library of 800 volumes. There was an effort by study clubs in town in 1898 to raise money and establish a free public library. The Chariton Federation of Women's Clubs took the lead and opened a library with the books from the courthouse in two rooms above Gibbons Drug Store on the town square. Citizens approved a local tax to support the library the following year.

Womans Club of Olympia

The Woman's Club of Olympia was founded in Olympia, Washington in 1883. It one of the one of the oldest woman's club on the West Coast. Founding members included Mehitable Elder, Pamela Case Hale, Mary Hartsock, Janet Moore, Phebe Moore, Mary Shelton, Ella Stork, Abbie Howard Hunt Stuart, and Sarah E. Whitney. Its first president, Mrs. A.H.H. Stewart, a college graduate and a veteran of the Women's Club in Boston, was a "driving force" in the club's organization and was known as the "Mother of Women's Clubs" for having founded other clubs, too.
