Caroline Hilary Barratt-Pugh (born November 1954) is an Australian scholar known for her contributions to early childhood education. She has been a professor and director of Early Childhood Research at Edith Cowan University (ECU), Perth, Western Australia, since 1992. [1] [2]

Early life and education

Barratt-Pugh was born to Jean Proud (née Hannon) and Clifford Proud in November 1954. [3]

She left Grange Girls' Grammar School at 16 to become a teaching assistant, eventually pursuing teacher training at Margaret Macmillan Training College. She later converted her qualification into a degree at the University of Leeds, where her passion for early literacy began under the mentorship of Joan Tough. [4]

Career

Barratt-Pugh began her teaching career in Keighley and contributed to professional development programs for teachers in Bradford. Her doctoral research at Leeds University focused on bilingual learners’ language development, laying the foundation for her career in applied linguistics. [1] [5]

She joined Manchester Metropolitan University, where she collaborated with notable educators, including Leslie Abbott, Andy Pickard and Nigel Hall, to advance teacher training pedagogy. In 1992, she moved to ECU, where she expanded her work in early literacy. [1]

Barratt-Pugh’s interest in early literacy learning has included several longitudinal collaborative research projects. The evaluation over two decades of the Better Beginnings book gifting program, led to the recent development of Kindytext, which provided parents with weekly text messages supporting children’s literacy. She also contributed to an ARC Centre of Excellence dedicated to creating positive digital childhoods for all Australian children. [6] [7]

Edith Cowan College (ECC), previously known as Perth Institute of Business and Technology, is an Australian tertiary education provider in Perth, Western Australia and is accredited by Government under the Higher Education Act 2004 to provide a range of higher education courses. Edith Cowan College has been in partnership with Edith Cowan University (ECU) since 1994. Since then over 9,000 students have successfully transitioned into Edith Cowan University.

Susan Neuman is an educator, researcher, and education policy-maker in early childhood and literacy development. In 2013, she became Professor of Early Childhood and Literacy Education, and Chair of the Department of Teaching and Learning at NYU's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.

Jane Torr is an Australian academic in the fields of early childhood language and literacy development in home and early childhood education and care settings. She is an honorary associate in the department of educational studies at Macquarie University, where she has been teaching and researching for over 30 years. Torr's research draws on systemic functional linguistic theory to explore the relationship between context and meaning in adult-child interactions, and the implications for children's learning. She has published over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, as well as publications in professional journals.

Marina Umaschi Bers is the Augustus Long Professor of Education at Boston College. Bers holds a secondary appointment in Boston College's Department of Computer Science. Bers directs the interdisciplinary DevTech Research Group, which she started in 2001 at Tufts University. Her research involves the design and study of innovative learning technologies to promote children's positive development. She is known for her work in the field of early childhood computer science with projects of national and international visibility. Bers is the co-creator of the free ScratchJr programming language, used by 35 million children, and the creator of the KIBO robotic kit, which has no screens or keyboards.

Jan Hare is an Anishinaabe scholar and educator. She is an associate professor of Language and Literacy Education and Professor of Indigenous Education in Teacher Education at the University of British Columbia. Hare is also a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Pedagogy.
