Cathy Ann Furlong is an American statistician active in volunteer work for statistical organizations. [1] She is the former president of Statistics Without Borders, [2] and represents the US in the International Statistical Institute Committee on Women in Statistics. [3]
Furlong earned a master's degree in statistics from American University, under the mentorship of Mary W. Gray, who also later encouraged her in her volunteer work. [2] [4] She worked in the public school system as a mathematics and statistics teacher until retiring in 2008, [4] and continues to work as a Medicare and Medicaid fraud investigator [2] [4] for Integrity Management Services, Inc. [3]
Furlong was the chair of Statistics Without Borders from 2014 to 2018, [1] and continues to serve as its past chair. [2] The organization provides statistical consulting on a volunteer basis, particularly to organizations and countries in the developing world; as of 2015, it had approximately 1400 members. [4]
She is one of three US representatives on the International Statistical Institute Committee on Women in Statistics, [3] and has also been active in the Caucus for Women in Statistics, [2] including serving as its membership coordinator. [5]
In 2017 the American Statistical Association elected Furlong as a fellow. [6]
Anna A. Eshoo is an American politician serving as the U.S. representative from California's 16th congressional district. She is a member of the Democratic Party. The district, numbered as the 18th district from 2013 to 2023, is based in Silicon Valley, including the cities of Redwood City, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, and Palo Alto, as well as part of San Jose. The Caucus for Women in Statistics is a professional society for women in statistics. It was founded in 1971, following discussions in 1969 and 1970 at the annual meetings of the American Statistical Association, with Donna Brogan as its first president. The Governing Council is the main governing body of the Caucus. The Council consists of the President, President-Elect, Past President, Past Past President, Executive Director (ex-officio), Treasurer, Secretary, Membership Chair, Program Committee Chair, Communications Committee Chair, Professional Development Committee Chair, Chair of Liaisons with other organizations and the Chair of Country Representatives. The President-Elect, President, Past President, Secretary, and Treasurer constitute the Executive Committee of the Governing Council. Caucus governance is described in the Constitution and Bylaws.
