Catherine Isabel McClay OBE FREng is the Head of Futures at the National Grid. She is focussed on the energy transition and decarbonisation. She was elected Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2019 and appointed Order of the British Empire in 2021.

Early life and education

McClay grew up in Northern Ireland and went to https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limavady_Grammar_School. She applied to study electrical engineering after a recommendation from her teacher, and eventually attended Imperial College London. [1] In 1990, she was appointed President of the City and Guilds College Union, the first woman to hold such a responsibility. She was a doctoral researcher at the University of Cambridge, where she studied ways to improve the efficiency of cage induction motors. [2] [3] After graduating, McClay returned to Imperial College London, where she worked as lecturer.[ citation needed ]

Research and career

McClay started a career in industry in 1999. She first joined Edison Mission Energy, where she worked on business modelling and strategy. In 2006 she moved to British Energy. She joined EDF Energy in 2009. [4] At EDF, McClay was responsible for portfolio management. [4] In 2015 McClay was appointed Head of Commercial at National Grid. [4]

McClay worked on systems operation at the National Grid. [1] [5] In particular, McClay works on future markets and the transition to zero carbon. [6] She was interested in demand side response (DSR), which provides electricity to people as and when they need it. She believes this approach can provide power at times it is more abundant and clean. McClay was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2019. [7]

In 2019, McClay moved to Sembcorp as Optimisation Director, where she focussed on flexible asset operation in the British market. [8]

Vehicle-to-grid (V2G), also known as Vehicle-to-home (V2H), describes a system in which plug-in electric vehicles (PEV) sell demand response services to the grid. Demand services are either delivering electricity or reducing their charging rate. Demand services reduce pressure on the grid, which might otherwise experience disruption from load variations. Vehicle-to-load (V2L) and Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) are related, but the AC phase is not sychronised with the grid, so the power is only available to an "off grid" load.

Sir Alec Westley Skempton was an English civil engineer internationally recognised, along with Karl Terzaghi, as one of the founding fathers of the engineering discipline of soil mechanics. He established the soil mechanics course at Imperial College London, where the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department's building was renamed after him in 2004, and was knighted in the 2000 New Year Honours for services to engineering. He was also a notable contributor on the history of British civil engineering.

The Sizewell nuclear site consists of two nuclear power stations, one of which is still operational, located near the small fishing village of Sizewell in Suffolk, England. In electrical engineering, electric machine is a general term for machines using electromagnetic forces, such as electric motors, electric generators, and others. They are electromechanical energy converters: an electric motor converts electricity to mechanical power while an electric generator converts mechanical power to electricity. The moving parts in a machine can be rotating or linear. Besides motors and generators, a third category often included is transformers, which although they do not have any moving parts are also energy converters, changing the voltage level of an alternating current.

Dame Susan Elizabeth Ion is a British engineer and an expert advisor on the nuclear power industry.

In 2016 the Women's Engineering Society (WES), in collaboration with the Daily Telegraph, produced an inaugural list of the United Kingdom's Top 50 Influential Women in Engineering, which was published on National Women in Engineering Day on 23 June 2016. The event was so successful it became an annual celebration. The list was instigated by Dawn Bonfield MBE, then Chief Executive of the Women's Engineering Society. In 2019, WES ended its collaboration with the Daily Telegraph and started a new collaboration with The Guardian newspaper.

Vera Lucia Fernandes de Paiva da Silva is a Portuguese engineer and the chief technology officer (CTO) at General Electric (GE) grid solutions part of GE Renewable Energy business. She is one of the few women to hold a chief technology officer position at General Electric. She works on electricity grids technology and renewable energy integration.

David John Noel Limebeer is an electrical engineer and academic. He is an Emeritus Professor of Control Engineering at the University of Oxford and a Distinguished Professor at the University of the Witwatersrand. He is also an Emeritus Professorial Fellow at New College, Oxford.
