Caustic Resin is an American indie rock band from Boise, Idaho consisting of Brett Netson on guitar and vocals, Tom Romich Jr. on bass guitar, and James Dillion or Pat Perkins on drums.

Biography

Caustic Resin formed in Boise, Idaho in 1988, the original lineup consisted of guitarist/singer Brett Netson (formerly of local punk outfit the Pugs), bassist Tom Romich Jr., and drummer Pat Perkins. They began playing mostly heavy metal venues, but soon began performing with Treepeople. Netson has long been associated with Doug Martsch, who founded Built to Spill in 1992 with Netson as an original member. Caustic Resin and Built to Spill have continued to collaborate, and released the joint EP, Built to Spill Caustic Resin , in 1995.

After signing to Up Records, Caustic Resin subsequently released Fly Me to the Moon in 1995. Produced by Phil Ek, the album was a departure from earlier metal-influenced work and a transition to alternative and space rock. [1]

Caustic Resin released The Medicine Is All Gone, their first album on Alias Records. [2] They released Trick Question in 1999, which featured bassist Mike Johnson of Dinosaur Jr. and Joe Plummer. [3] The band released The Afterbirth in 2000, their last album for Alias before returning to Up Records. [4] In the meantime, Netson played and toured with Built to Spill. Finally, in 2003, Caustic Resin returned with Keep on Truckin, which featured original drummer Pat Perkins and split bass duties between Romich and Johnson.

Caustic Resin has been on indefinite hiatus since 2003, though they appeared at Treefort Music Fest in 2014. [5] [6]

Since the band's indefinite hiatus, Netson became a member of Earth, and toured with Boris in 2016. [7] Romich continues to work as a musician in Boise, and Perkins became a web developer, working at the College of Western Idaho and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game.

On 15 January 2025, it was announced that Tom Romich had died. [8]

Ultimate Alternative Wavers is the debut studio album by American indie rock band Built to Spill. The line-up consisted of Doug Martsch on guitar and vocals, Brett Netson on guitar and bass, and Ralf Youtz on drums, although there was some variation in instrumentation on a few tracks. The album was recorded at Audio Lab in Boise, Idaho, in the fall of 1992, and released in 1993 on C/Z Records. It was re-released in late 2006.

Up Records was a Seattle based independent record label founded in 1994 by Chris Takino and Rich Jensen. Some of the label's best-known artists were Duster, 764-HERO, Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, Quasi and Tad.

Treepeople was an alternative rock band from Boise, Idaho, although its members were officially based in Seattle, Washington. The band was originally composed of vocalist/guitarist Scott Schmaljohn, drummer Wayne Flower, guitarist/vocalist Doug Martsch, and bassist Pat Brown. After six albums and various lineup changes, the band disbanded in 1994. The band's original lineup reformed in 2018, sans Brown due to his death in 1999. They eventually concluded their final tour in 2023.

Treefort has been called "the west’s best SXSW alternative" and "Boise's preeminent artistic, cultural, and musical happening" which has "morphed from quirky music festival to consuming community event." It has also been characterized as having become a "nationally renowned gathering just by maintaining its personable close-knit vibe" and a "music lover's joyous mayhem" which showcases and amplifies the soul of Boise. Given its track record, by its seventh year Treefort was being hailed as "the greatest music festival in the country" and "an absolute gem of a festival."
