Dieting is the practice of eating food in a regulated way to decrease, maintain, or increase body weight, or to prevent and treat diseases such as diabetes and obesity. As weight loss depends on calorie intake, different kinds of calorie-reduced diets, such as those emphasising particular macronutrients, have been shown to be no more effective than one another. As weight regain is common, diet success is best predicted by long-term adherence. Regardless, the outcome of a diet can vary widely depending on the individual.

Battle is a town and civil parish in the district of Rother in East Sussex, England. It lies 50 miles (80 km) south-east of London, 27 miles (43 km) east of Brighton and 20 miles (32 km) east of Lewes. Hastings is to the south-east and Bexhill-on-Sea to the south. Battle is in the designated High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The parish population was 6,048 according to the 2001 census, increasing to 6,673 with the 2011 Census. Battle is near the site of, and named after, the Battle of Hastings, where William, Duke of Normandy, defeated King Harold II to become William I of England in 1066.

Weight cutting is the practice of fast weight loss prior to a sporting competition. It most frequently happens in order to qualify for a lower weight class or in sports where it is advantageous to weigh as little as possible. There are two types of weight cutting: one method is to lose weight in the form of fat and muscle in the weeks prior to an event; the other is to lose weight in the form of water in the final days before competition. Common methods to cut weight include restricting food intake, water-loading, and perspiration through exercise, wearing a sweatsuit, and/or sitting in a sauna.
Katie Green is an English model from Chichester, West Sussex. She was first given an opportunity to model when a Surrey photographer arranged a test-shoot for her at Image Park Studio in West Sussex. Green was originally signed to represent Wonderbra in July 2008, but her agency required her to lose weight, and she refused, ending her contract. Green is unusual among models because of her weight for someone her size and her refusal to lose weight to conform to the norms agencies expect of models. She initiated a campaign against size zero models with the Liberal Democrat MP Lembit Öpik. Green continues to model and has appeared in numerous publications and campaigns.

The Biggest Loser UK 2012 is the fifth series of the reality television show titled The Biggest Loser. The series began on ITV on 3 January 2012 and ended on 13 March 2012, with seven overweight pairs competing for a cash prize. Davina McCall is featured as the host, with trainer Richard Callender and two new trainers, Charlotte Ord and Rob Edmond, who replaced Angie Dowds. Dowds had left the show part-way through the fourth season, although she returned for the final. Dowds died on 23 November 2011 in an apparent suicide. The prize of £25,000 was won by Kevin McLernon, who shed 40% of his body weight.

Riley Carter Millington is an English actor known for playing Kyle Slater in the BBC soap opera EastEnders in 2015–2016. He was the first trans man to play a regular transgender character in British soap history. The Independent on Sunday, in its 2015 "Rainbow List", named Millington the most influential LGBTI person in the UK, making him the first trans man to top the list. The judges stated him playing Kyle "could help trans people – even save lives – and represents a landmark cultural moment."

The episode features the only appearance of the character Alison Slater, played by Denise Welch. The episode focuses on Alison meeting her transgender son Kyle Slater for the first time since he transitioned from female to male, though Alison ultimately rejects her son. It also includes a "heartbreaking" scene between Sonia Fowler and Dot Branning about the possibility of Sonia having breast cancer, which was praised as "fantastic" by Inside Soap. The episode received a total viewership of 7,250,000 in the United Kingdom.
The Battle of Mosul was a major military campaign launched by the Iraqi Government forces with allied militias, the Kurdistan Regional Government, and international forces to retake the city of Mosul from the Islamic State (ISIL), which had seized the city in June 2014. The battle at the time was the world's single largest military operation since the 2003 invasion of Iraq and was considered the toughest urban battle since World War II. The operation, dubbed Operation "We Are Coming, Nineveh", began on 16 October 2016, with forces besieging ISIL-controlled areas in the Nineveh Governorate surrounding Mosul, and continued with Iraqi troops and Peshmerga fighters engaging ISIL on three fronts outside Mosul, going from village to village in the surrounding area in the largest deployment of Iraqi troops since the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
