Carnival in Italy is a farewell party to eat, drink, and have fun before the limitations and solemnity of Lent. About a month before Ash Wednesday, Italians celebrate over many weekends with parades, masks, and confetti. The origins of this event may be traced to ancient Greece and Rome, when they worshipped Bacchus and Saturn. Some think they date back to archaic winter-to-spring ceremonies. Despite its pagan origins, the event was so extensively celebrated and the tradition so powerful that it was swiftly altered to fit into Catholic rituals. Carnival in Italy is traditionally celebrated on Fat Tuesday, but the weekend prior features activities as well. The most famous Carnivals in Italy are those held in Venice, Viareggio, Ivrea, Cento, Apulia and Acireale. These Carnivals include masquerades and parades.

Associazione Sportiva Roma did not repeat its Coppa Italia victory from the previous season, but retained its status as the top team from the Capital with fifth in the league standings. Roma's main struggle was its inability to seal matches by a close margin, drawing on 14 occasions, and it neither had a watertight defence, nor a fearsome attack. Despite those shortcomings, Roma was only three points behind Torino for third.

Associazione Sportiva Roma lost its position as the dominant team in Rome, due to a mediocre season. New manager Vujadin Boškov had led Sampdoria to a domestic league title and European Cup final, but his only season in the capital was hampered by too many draws and struggles to be able to outplay the opposition. The result was a tenth place, just three points clear of the drop zone, and Boškov left his job following the end of the season, when Roma also lost the Coppa Italia final to Torino.

S.S.C. Napoli won its first Serie A title with recently crowned World Cup winner Diego Maradona as their most influential player. Central defender Ciro Ferrara got his breakthrough, helping out the team to win the trophy. The two new signings Andrea Carnevale and Fernando De Napoli also proved crucial in the title-winning campaign, which sparked off fanatical celebrations in Naples.

S.S.C. Napoli only just failed to defend its inaugural Serie A title, finishing three points behind A.C. Milan. Napoli proved to be the most offensive team in the entire league, with Careca and Diego Maradona dominating the scoring charts. Due to Milan's strong defence that was not enough for the title, and due to a 3-2 defeat at home to the eventual champions, the title defence got out of reach.

S.S.C. Napoli won an international trophy for the first time, defeating Stuttgart 2-1 and drawing 3-3 in the two-legged final. Napoli did not match Inter in the domestic league, but recorded a second place, its fourth consecutive podium finish in the final standings.

Carnevale is an Italian word derived from the Latin expressions carnis and "levare". So "carnevale" means literally "remove meat". It refers to the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, the traditional Christian period of 40 days before Easter, commemorating the 40 days Jesus fasted in the desert, which was a period of abstaining from meat and other pleasures of the flesh. So it was the day to get those last enjoyments in. "Mardi gras" refers to the same day. Also known as "Shrove Tuesday". In Italy this holiday is celebrated with parades where children dress up in costumes. The most famous parade and exhibition of elaborate costumes is in Venice. Traditional pastries of fried dough covered in powdered sugar are also wildly available in local bread shops.

S.S.C. Napoli won their second ever Italian championship, thanks to a new club record in points scored over the course of the season. Diego Maradona scored 16 of the side's 57, whilst the contributions of other players such as Careca and Gianfranco Zola gave Napoli enough of an attacking edge to claim the title.

Associazione Sportiva Roma won the Coppa Italia and reached the final of the UEFA Cup, which compensated for Ottavio Bianchi's problematic league season, where Roma finished a mere 9th place, their worst season since 1979.
