The Center for Forensic Psychiatry is a psychiatric hospital located in Saline, Michigan, operated by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, specializing in forensic psychiatry which houses and treats mentally ill individuals who have been charged with a crime but are incompetent for trial, have been deemed not guilty by reason of insanity, or are civilly committed (with or without criminal charges), but deemed too difficult for other state hospitals. The Center for Forensic Psychiatry was first built in 1969 for the purpose of conducting psychiatric evaluations and restoring the competency of Michigan detainees before and during their trials. The center is the only hospital in Michigan certified to conduct evaluations regarding mental competency and criminal responsibility and hears all cases in Michigan where a defendant's mental state is in question.
