Centro Abreu, formally named Ozamarte Centro de Arte Contemporáneo, is a cultural center in Santo Domingo founded by painter Oscar Abreu. Centro Abreu currently serves as an art gallery, community center, and hub for new and established artists in Santo Domingo. [1]

Santo Domingo, officially Santo Domingo de Guzmán, is the capital and largest city in the Dominican Republic and the largest metropolitan area in the Caribbean by population. In 2010, its population was counted as 965,040, rising to 2,908,607 when its surrounding metropolitan area was included. The city is coterminous with the boundaries of the Distrito Nacional, itself bordered on three sides by Santo Domingo Province.

Oscar Abreu is also a sculptor, art collector, cultural personality and performance artist, who lives and works in Dominican Republic. Abreu is the founder of Centro Abreu and of Psycho-Expressionism, an artistic movement that emphasizes causal relationships that characterize specific psychological states.

History

Ozamarte Centro de Arte Contemporáneo was founded in 2006 by painter Oscar Abreu. Ozamarte Centro de Arte Contemporáneo was the first cultural institute built in Santo Domingo's historical East District. The center was inaugurated with Generaciones, an exhibition that featured works by Domingo Liz, Freddy Javier, Elvis Avilés, Amado Melo, José Sejo, and Amaurys Reyes. [2]

In 2007 the center's name was changed to Centro Abreu and was inaugurated with the exhibition “Ironía Radical” by Aram Musset. [3]

In 2008, the center presented the exhibition of French artist Genevieve Laget. Celebrated personalities visited, including the former Director of Aeronautics in the Dominican Republic, José Tomas Pérez; the president of El Partido Nacional de Veteranos y Civiles (The National Veterans and Civil Party), Juan Cohen Sander; and The Honorable Tony Raful, among other figures. Yamilet Peña Abreu is an elite artistic gymnast from the Dominican Republic who won a gold medal at the 2014 World Challenge Cup and the 2012 Pan American Championship in vault and a bronze medal at the 2012 World Cup. She is known for her execution of the Produnova—a handspring double front on vault. She qualified for the vault finals at the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2011 and the 2013 World Championships.

Fabio Fiallo, in full Fabio Federico Fiallo Cabral was a Dominican writer, poet and politician. Fiallo was born in the city of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on February 3, 1866. His parents were Juan Ramón Fiallo Rodríguez and Ana María Cabral y Figueredo. From a young age he had the political guidance of his father, who since the administration of President General José María Cabral y Luna was part of important committees to negotiate a Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Commerce between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. After joining the Faculty of Law at the Instituto Profesional de Santo Domingo, he abandoned his studies to devote himself to politics and poetry.
