Career

Anderson has been described by TechCrunch as “among the best-positioned people on either the investment or the operator side to weigh in on the current and future state of the space startup industry”. [9] [10]

Since 2012, Anderson has served as CEO of Space Angels, a venture capital platform focused on early-stage investments in the space economy. He re-founded the company in 2015. [11] [12] [13]

In 2013, Anderson published an academic paper that explored the ramifications of SpaceX’s inaugural International Space Station cargo run, explaining how public–private partnerships had made commercial spaceflight economically feasible and arguing for the real, near-term economic potential of space technologies. [14] [15]

Anderson founded Space Capital, an early-stage venture capital firm that invests exclusively in space-based technologies, with Tom Ingersoll and launched its first institutional fund of $16 million in 2017. [2] [16]

In addition to his work at Space Capital, Anderson serves on boards including that of the Satellite Applications Catapult, which supports the United Kingdom’s national strategy to grow its space sector. [17] [4]

Exploration

Anderson is a Member Resident of the Explorers Club, a non-profit that promotes the scientific exploration of land, sea, air, and space and has served as director of the board. [18] [10]

Anderson was among the first people to swim the circumference of the island of Islay, Scotland. [10] [19] [20] [21] [22] Stopping at each of the island’s operating distilleries and filling a 30-gallon oak cask with whisky from each, he bottled and sold the resulting blend to benefit the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. [23] [21] Anderson produced a documentary film titled “The Great Islay Swim” about the expedition with an initial screening held at the Explorers Club in New York City. [24] [25]

Anderson also mapped the ancient mezcal trail in Oaxaca, Mexico, transporting a 50-gallon oak barrel of actively fermenting agave pulp across the state and, in the process, creating the world’s most unique mezcal. [10] [26] Anderson produced a documentary film “The Mezcalarians” about the expedition called with a special screening held at the Explorers Club in New York City. [27] [28]
