Chamber Music Charleston is an American 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to music education and the performance of chamber music in and around Charleston, South Carolina.

Chamber Music Charleston was founded by bassoonist Sandra Nikolajevs [1] in 2006, who remains its director. It performs numerous concerts and events in homes, historic venues, churches and galleries throughout the South Carolina Lowcountry region, including series in historic downtown Charleston, Kiawah Island, Seabrook Island and Daniel Island. [2] It has collaborated with leading Charleston cultural organizations including the Footlight Players Theater, [3] Actors Theatre of South Carolina, [4] ArtsMusic Productions, [5] the Preservation Society of Charleston, [6] Ballet Evolution, [7] and the Piccolo Spoleto Festival. [8] Notable among these have been productions of Dylan Thomas' A Child's Christmas in Wales with veteran screen actor Clarence Felder; Beethoven: His Women and His Music, also with Felder; The Gift of the Magi directed and produced by veteran television and film actor Chris Weatherhead; Margot Theis Raven's critically acclaimed children's story Circle Unbroken [9] set to the music of William Grant Still and Margot Theis Raven's children's story America's White Table [10] set to the music of Charles Ives. The DVD Circle Unbroken [11] received numerous awards including "Best Children’s Film Award" at the XXIV Black International Cinema Berlin Film Festival 2009 [12] and "Award of Excellence" at the 2009 Accolade Competition in La Jolla, California. [13]

CMC's roster includes eleven local professional musicians, many of whom are current and former principal members of Savannah Philharmonic, [14] Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, [15] and the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. [16] CMC also invites acclaimed national musicians to perform with the musicians of CMC. Such guest musicians have included violinists Jennifer Frautschi, [17] Elizabeth Pitcairn, [18] Danel Ching, Francisco Fullana, Karen Kim, [19] Amy Schwartz Moretti, [19] and Anthea Kreston; [19] pianists Andrew Armstrong [19] and Phillip Bush; Bassist Xavier Foley.

During the 2021-2022 Concert Season Guest Violinist Midori, [20] performed a special recital with pianist Özgür Aydin. [21]

Past and continuing activities include the Mozart in the South Festival, [22] Ovation Concerts, Salon Series Concerts at South Carolina Society Hall, Memminger Auditorium Concerts, [23] Gallery Concerts, [24] [25] Classical Kids Concerts [26] and "instrumental petting zoos" [27] in addition to their House Concerts.

The Charleston Symphony Orchestra aka CSO, is an American orchestra based in Charleston, South Carolina and performs Masterworks and Pops series, Youth Orchestra concerts and more, at the Gaillard Center and dozens of other venues across the Lowcountry. The current roster of full-time, salaried core musicians is 24. The orchestra supplements its core by bringing more than 400 professionally auditioned guest musicians to Charleston annually.

Robert Hart Baker is a symphonic and operatic conductor and music director based in York, Pennsylvania, United States. He has toured extensively in the U.S., Canada, and abroad. Among the many concerts he has led have been the full works of the Beethoven, Brahms, Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky symphonies and the Strauss tone poems, in addition to most of the orchestral works of Mahler, Dvorak, Schubert, Debussy, Ravel, Poulenc, and Ernest Bloch.

David Hattner is an American professional clarinetist and conductor currently serving as music director of the Portland Youth Philharmonic. Raised in Toledo, Ohio, Hattner attended the Interlochen Arts Camp and Arts Academy, experiences which inspired him to become a professional musician and conductor. He graduated from the Arts Academy in 1986 and enrolled in Northwestern University where he studied clarinet performance under Robert Marcellus. In 1988 he placed second in the International Clarinet Association's Young Artist Competition and was selected to join the American-Soviet Youth Orchestra. He earned a music degree with honors in 1990.

Kenji Bunch is an American composer and violist living in Portland, Oregon. Bunch currently serves as the artistic director of Fear No Music and teaches at Portland State University, Reed College, and for the Portland Youth Philharmonic. He is also the director of MYSfits, the most advanced string ensemble of the Metropolitan Youth Symphony.

The Gaillard Center is a concert hall and performance venue in Charleston, South Carolina. It opened in 2015 and replaced the Gaillard Municipal Auditorium. Both buildings were named after John Palmer Gaillard Jr., mayor of Charleston from 1959 to 1975. Constructing the new facility was a central priority of mayor Joe Riley's administration. The opening, planned for early 2015 in time for the city's Spoleto Festival, was delayed by six months due to budgetary overages. Yo-Yo Ma performed at the opening of the center.

Jonathon Heyward is an American conductor. From 2016, he was assistant conductor of The Hallé, and music director of The Hallé Youth Orchestra. He has been chief conductor of the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie from 2021. On July 21, 2022, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra announced that it had chosen Jonathon Heyward as its next music director. He is the first person of color to direct the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.
