The Chamber Music Society of Colombo (CMSC) was conceptualized in 1998 by a few musicians living in Sri Lanka. The Ensemble of the CMSC made its debut in January 2007 with a concert for the Sri Lankan President, Mahinda Rajapaksa. [1]
The CMSC's Artistic Director Lakshman Joseph De Saram also writes music for films, and has won several awards including the International Signis Award for most outstanding original music. [2]
The 24-piece ensemble typically performs without a conductor. Its repertoire includes baroque, classical and contemporary.
The CMSC commissions new works from living composers that draw on Sri Lankan sources of inspiration. [3] Works commissioned in this manner have led to three world premieres being performed by the ensemble: "Beyond the Horizon" by Premasiri Khemadasa, and "Paths in the Forest" and "Dawn of Kandula", both by Stephen Allen. The Society started an "Emerging Artistes Program" in 2008, with a view to encouraging and educating gifted new artists. In March 2012, a collaboration with the Goethe Institute in Colombo began with an ongoing series entitled "Chamber Music Plus". [5]
The 2009-2010 season was mostly dedicated to presenting concerts and workshops celebrating the significant birth and death anniversaries of Henry Purcell, George Frideric Handel, Joseph Haydn, and Felix Mendelssohn. Partnering the CMSC was the Goethe Institute – Colombo and the German Embassy in Sri Lanka. The Society frequently works with European diplomatic missions based in Colombo, including the Embassy of Norway and Rikskonsertene (Concerts Norway), to stage concerts relating to the music from those countries. In 2013, the society signed a memorandum of understanding with Fairway Holdings, to be its Premier Sponsor for 3 years, through to the 2016 season. [8]
The CMSC is a non-profit limited liability company registered under Sri Lanka's Companies Act No. 7 of 2007. It has a Board of Patrons and a Council of Benefactors who offer both advisory and material support. [9] [10]
Zahira College is an Islamic school at Colombo in Maradana, Sri Lanka. It was founded in 1892 as Al Madrasathul Zahira by one of renowned Islamic lawyer and educationalist, Muhammad Cassim Siddi Lebbe, with the active patronage of Ahmed Orabi Pasha of Egypt. The college also has one of the oldest mosques in the country on its campus.
Bathiya & Santhush, also known as BNS, are a Sri Lankan pop duo consisting of Bathiya Jayakody and Santhush Weeraman, who met while at the "Mary Anne David School of Vocal Music" in Colombo. They both were born in Colombo, Sri Lanka. They have been one of the most commercially successful music acts in Sri Lanka in the last two decades.
Addararachchige Gunendra Kamal, popularly as Kamal Addararachchi, is an actor in Sri Lankan cinema, theatre and television, as well as a singer and presenter.Widely regarded as one of the greatest Sinhala actors of all time, Addaraarachchi made his debut as an actor in Gamini Fonseka's 1981 film Sagarayak Meda, whilst he was a still a student at school. Since the late 1970s, he has appeared in a variety of roles in many films and teledramas. He has acted in over 40 films, 20 teledramas and 6 stage plays, and won the Sarasaviya Best Actor Award for his role of Sobana in Jayantha Chandrasiri's film Agnidahaya in 2002.
Nalanda College is a leading Buddhist school in Sri Lanka where provides primary and secondary education for Sri Lankan boys. The school was established by P. de S. Kularatne as an offshoot of Ananda College Colombo and was registered as a separate school on 1 November 1924.
University of the Visual and Performing Arts (UVPA) is a public university located primarily in Colombo, Sri Lanka, specialising in art, design, fashion and the performing arts. It was formerly known as the Government College of Fine Arts, Heywood Institute of Art and the Institute of Aesthetic Studies of the University of Ceylon. It has no known date of foundation, but there is evidence of teaching as far back as 1893. It is the only university in Sri Lanka to exclusively offer special degree programs in visual and performing arts.

Dhamma Jagoda was the first Head of the Drama Unit at the National Television channel Rupavahini Corporation in Sri Lanka. He was a pioneer theater and television play director and actor in Sri Lanka. He inaugurated the first theatre school at Lionel Wendt Art Centre, Colombo 7, in the 1970s and it was the foundation for many artists who have emerged in Sri Lanka in recent years. Dhamma Jagoda was educated at Mahinda College, Galle and Nalanda College, Colombo.

Soma Edirisinghe was a Sri Lankan corporate executive, film producer, philanthropist and social worker. She was born in Meegoda, Sri Lanka on 5 July 1939 to a family of nine daughters, and died on 5 November 2015 at a private hospital in Colombo. She was married to EAP Edirisinghe and they had four children: three sons, Jeewaka, Nalaka and Asanka, and a daughter, Deepa.
Thisuri Wanniarachchi is a Sri Lankan author and public policy specialist. She is known for her books Colombo Streets, which won a 2009 State Literary Award, and The Terrorist's Daughter (2014) She is also known for her stint as President Maithripala Sirisena's Assistant Director of Sustainable Development and the National Coordinator of the "Vision 2030" Sustainable Development Policy Formulation Project. and her work for the World Bank. Wanniarachchi resigned from her position in the Sirisena Administration in the immediate aftermath of the unconstitutional coup of October 2018. She later served as the Secretary to the President's Expert Committee to Restructure SriLankan Airlines. Wanniarachchi also served as the Lead Analyst of the Ministry of Economic Reforms in the Government of Sri Lanka in 2019.

By being a judge at the 9th World Choir Games, she also became the first Sri Lankan to be a judge at any international musical competition.
