Charles Games is a Czech independent video game developing company founded in 2020 under Charles University. It aims to develop and sell computer games as well as serve as an incubator for computer game development students. [1]

History

Charles University started developing video games in 2010s. Employees and students from Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Mathematics and Physics made education game Československo 38–89: Atentát in 2015. In 2017 they developed largely expanded version Attentat 1942. Success of Attentat 1942 led to decision to establish new development studio. [2] [3]

Charles Games was founded in 2020. Otomar Sláma became first director. He stated that the profit from the sales of games will be invested back into the project, at least in the first years. He also expects Charles Games to increase the sales potential of games developed at Charles University. 6 people were employed at Charles Games at the time. [4] [5] First project released under Charles Games was Svoboda 1945: Liberation. [3] It was followed by Train To Sachsenhausen which was developed in cooperation with in cooperation with the Living Memory organization. [6] Charles Games next game was Beecarbonize which tackled topic of climate change. It received nomination for Apple Design Awards in category Social Impact. [7] In May 2024 the studio released Playing Kafka. [8]

Attentat 1942 is a Czech point-and-click adventure game developed by Charles University and the Czech Academy of Sciences. Based on true events, players investigate the protagonist's family history and learn the truth about various events that took place Nazi-occupied Czech lands during World War II. The game received positive reviews upon its release and won multiple accolades, including Czech Game of the Year from the Czech Game of the Year Awards. A sequel, Svoboda 1945: Liberation, was released in 2021.

<i>Pilgrims</i> (video game) 2019 adventure video game

Pilgrims is a graphic adventure game developed and published by Amanita Design. The game was released for Linux, macOS, Windows, and Apple Arcade on 6 October 2019, Nintendo Switch on 3 November 2022, and the iOS App Store and Android devices on 17 April 2024. Svoboda 1945: Liberation is a 2021 Czech point-and-click adventure game. It is the sequel to Attentat 1942 (2017) and was the first game developed by Charles Games, a subsidiary ofCharles University. The game tells the story of the end of World War II and the subsequent displacement of the German population from the perspective of people who experienced the events. The game is based on film interviews, interactive comics and authentic footage. The characters in the game and their stories are fictional, but they were created based on historical research and contemporary testimonies.

<i>Train To Sachsenhausen</i> 2022 video game

Train To Sachsenhausen is a 2022 educational video game by Charles Games. It was released for Windows, Android and iOS on 22 March 2022. Charles Games published it in cooperation with non-profit company Živá paměť.
