Charles Games is a Czech independent video game developing company founded in 2020 under Charles University. It aims to develop and sell computer games as well as serve as an incubator for computer game development students. [1]
Charles University started developing video games in 2010s. Employees and students from Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Mathematics and Physics made education game Československo 38–89: Atentát in 2015. In 2017 they developed largely expanded version Attentat 1942. Success of Attentat 1942 led to decision to establish new development studio. [2] [3]
Charles Games was founded in 2020. Otakar Sláma became first director. He stated that the profit from the sales of games will be invested back into the project, at least in the first years. He also expects Charles Games to increase the sales potential of games developed at Charles University. 6 people were employed at Charles Games at the time. [4] [5] First project released under Charles Games was Svoboda 1945: Liberation. [3] It was followed by Train To Sachsenhausen which was developed in cooperation with in cooperation with the Living Memory organization. [6] Charles Games next game was Beecarbonize which tackled topic of climate change. It received nomination for Apple Design Awards in category Social Impact. [7] In May 2024 the studio released Playing Kafka. [8]

Charles University, also known as Charles University in Prague or historically as the University of Prague, is the oldest and largest university in the Czech Republic, the second university established in the Holy Roman Empire after Bologna. Craneballs Studio is a video game development company based in the Czech Republic. It was founded in 2008. The company originally focused on web design and making graphics. It started to develop video games near the end of 2008 due to the financial crisis of 2007–08. Its first video game was released in 2009 and was financially successful. Its other games were successful too, so the studio has grown from three people to around 20.
The video game industry in the Czech Republic has produced numerous globally successful video games such as Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis and the subsequent ArmA series, the Mafia series, Truck Simulator series, the Kingdom Come: Deliverance series, the Samorost series and others. There were 300–400 video game developers and around 30 video game companies focusing on video game development in 2014. In 2017 it was 1,100 developers and 47 companies. Video games are also considered by some experts to be the country's biggest cultural export. The video game industry did not enjoy a good reputation and was unsupported by the state until 2013, when the Ministry of Industry and Trade started to seek ways to kickstart the economy. By 2014, programs were planned to support the video game industry. Another problem is a lack of video game development specialization at any university.
Věra Jourová is a Czech politician and lawyer who has been the Vice President of the European Commission for Values and Transparency since 1 December 2019 and previously served as the European Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality from 2014 to 2019. Horké léto is a point-and-click video game. Developed by Czech studio Maxon, it was published in 1998 by JRC Interactive. A sequel, entitled Horké léto 2, was developed by Centauri Production and published in 1999 by JRC Interactive. A third game Žhavé léto 3 ½ is an action/adventure/driving game developed by Centauri Production and CINEMAX, published by Akella in 2006, which although unable to use the characters and titles of the first two games was related and rounded off what was effectively a trilogy. Žhavé léto 3 ½ was published in English, Spanish, French and German as Evil Days of Luckless John and in Russian as Сорвать Куш.
Poklad is a 1984 Czech text adventure video game for the ZX Spectrum and compatible systems. it was authored by František Fuka as his first text video game. It was published by Proxima Software as part of their "Fuxoft uvádí" series. A newer version of the game entitled Poklad 2 was designed in 1985 and released in 1992.
Attentat 1942 is a Czech point-and-click adventure game, in which players take the role of Jindřich Jelínek's grandchild. Jelínek was arrested by the Gestapo shortly after the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, ruler of the Nazi-occupied Czech lands and the leading architect of The Holocaust. The objective of the game is to establish what role he played in the attack, as well as the reason for his arrest. Throughout the investigation, players interview eyewitnesses, discover the family's back story and learn more about life in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia.
