The Royal Canadian Navy is the naval force of Canada. The navy is one of three environmental commands within the Canadian Armed Forces. As of February 2024,the RCN operates 12 Halifax-class frigates,12 Kingston-class coastal defence vessels,4 Victoria-class submarines,4 Harry DeWolf-class offshore patrol vessels,8 Orca-class patrol vessels,and several auxiliary vessels. The RCN consists of 8,400 Regular Force and 4,100 Primary Reserve sailors,supported by 3,800 civilians. Vice-Admiral Angus Topshee is the commander of the Royal Canadian Navy and chief of the Naval Staff.
The history of the Royal Canadian Navy goes back to 1910,when the naval force was created as the Naval Service of Canada and renamed a year later by King George V. The Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) is one of the three environmental commands of the Canadian Forces. Over the course of its history,the RCN has played a role in the First World War,contributed significantly to the Battle of the Atlantic during the Second World War,and was a part of NATO's force buildup during the Cold War. In 1968,the RCN was amalgamated with the Canadian Army and the Royal Canadian Air Force to form what is today the unified Canadian Armed Forces. The naval force was known as Maritime Command until 2011,when the environmental command was renamed as the Royal Canadian Navy.
The Township of Esquimalt is a municipality at the southern tip of Vancouver Island,in British Columbia,Canada. It is bordered to the east by the provincial capital,Victoria,to the south by the Strait of Juan de Fuca,to the west by Esquimalt Harbour and Royal Roads,to the northwest by the New Songhees 1A Indian reserve and the town of View Royal,and to the north by a narrow inlet of water called the Gorge,across which is the district municipality of Saanich. It is almost tangential to Esquimalt 1 Indian Reserve near Admirals Road. It is one of the 13 municipalities of Greater Victoria and part of the Capital Regional District.
The Pacific Station was created in 1837 as one of the geographical military formations into which the Royal Navy divided its worldwide responsibilities. The South America Station was split into the Pacific Station and the South East Coast of America Station.

Admiral Percy Walker Nelles,was a flag officer in the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and the Chief of the Naval Staff from 1 January 1934 to 15 January 1944. He oversaw the massive wartime expansion of the RCN and the transformation of Canada into a major player in the Battle of the Atlantic. During his tenure U-boats raided the Gulf of St. Lawrence,Canadian Northwest Atlantic command was created,and the RCN provided up to 40% of all escort forces in the North Atlantic. His handling of the RCN's war effort had its opponents however,and he was removed from his post as Chief of the Naval Staff in January 1944. He was sent to London as Overseas Naval Attaché,coordinating RCN operations for Operation Overlord. He retired in January 1945 as a full admiral.

HMCS Miramichi was a Bangor-class minesweeper that served in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War. She remained on the west coast of Canada for the entirety of the war. She was named for Miramichi,New Brunswick. After the war she was purchased with the intent of conversion for mercantile use. However,that never took place and instead,she was scrapped in 1949.

HMCS Beacon Hill was a River-class frigate that served in the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) as an ocean convoy escort during the Second World War. She fought primarily in the Battle of the Atlantic. In 1954 she was converted to a Prestonian-class frigate and served until 1957. She was named for Victoria,British Columbia,but because HMS Victorious was in service with the Royal Navy,the RCN,in an effort to avoid confusion,chose to honour the city by choosing another name associated with it.

Franklin John Trehern Mitchell was a plasterer and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Esquimalt from 1951 to 1953 as a Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) member and Esquimalt-Port Renfrew from 1979 to 1986 as a New Democratic Party member in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia.
HMCS Quatsino was a Bangor-class minesweeper constructed for the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War. Entering service in 1941,the minesweeper spent the entire war on the West Coast of Canada. Following the war,the vessel was sold for mercantile conversion in 1947 and renamed Chen Hsin. In 1950 the merchant ship was sold and renamed Concord before being broken up for scrap in 1951.
HMCS Prince Robert was the first of three refrigerated passenger and cargo ships constructed at Birkenhead for Canadian National for operation along the British Columbia Coast during the 1930s. The ship's arrival during the Great Depression led to the vessel's financial failure and by 1935,the ship was in limited use. With the onset of World War II,the Royal Canadian Navy acquired the vessel for use as an armed merchant cruiser for protection of western coast of Canada. Upon completion,Prince Robert and her sister ships were the most powerful ships operated by the Canadians until the arrival of larger cruisers later in the war. Converted at Esquimalt,British Columbia and commissioned into the Royal Canadian Navy in September 1940,Prince Robert saw its first action along the Mexican coast,capturing the German freighter Weser later that month. Prince Robert then continued patrolling along the Pacific coast of North America,then being sent to Australia to escort troop convoys across the Pacific.
The Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy is one of six regular force military bands of the Canadian Forces. The Royal Canadian Navy band is based at CFB Esquimalt in Esquimalt,British Columbia that serves as the official musical unit of the Canadian Forces Maritime Forces Pacific Command (MARPAC).
