Starkville is a city in, and the county seat of, Oktibbeha County, Mississippi, United States. Mississippi State University, the state's land-grant institution and a public flagship university, is located partially in Starkville but primarily in an adjacent unincorporated area designated by the United States Census Bureau as Mississippi State, Mississippi. The population was 25,352 in 2017. Starkville is the most populous city of the Golden Triangle region of Mississippi. The Starkville micropolitan statistical area includes all of Oktibbeha County.

USM's newest sport of women's beach volleyball, a sport not sponsored by C-USA, was added in the 2018–19 school year and competes in the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association. The school's earliest nickname was Tigers. Thereafter came such nicknames as Normalites, Yellow Jackets, Confederates, and Southerners. Golden Eagles was selected in a student/alumni vote in the early 1972. Seymour d'Campus is the name of the modern-day mascot eagle.

Southern Miss has won five Conference USA Regular Season Championships and five Tournament Championships and is the only team in CUSA to participate in every conference baseball tournament since the conference's inception. The Golden Eagles rich history began in 1912 with a game against the Detroit Tigers, a contest which Southern Miss lost by a score of 24–2. The Golden Eagles play at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi and consistently rank in the top 20 nationally in NCAA attendance figures.
The Ole Miss riot of 1962, or Battle of Oxford, was fought between Southern segregationists and federal and state forces beginning the night of September 30, 1962. Segregationists were protesting the enrollment of James Meredith, a black US military veteran, at the University of Mississippi at Oxford, Mississippi. Two civilians, one a French journalist, were killed during the night, and over 300 people were injured, including one-third of the US Marshals deployed.
Austin Davis is a former American football quarterback who is currently an offensive assistant for the Seattle Seahawks. A walk-on to the Southern Miss Golden Eagles program, Davis redshirted the 2007 season and became the starter a year later. He ended the year with a combined total of 15 school records for both game and single-season marks and led the Golden Eagles to a bowl game victory in the 2008 New Orleans Bowl. He was selected to the Freshman All-Conference USA team and earned a Freshman All-American honorable mention by College Football News for 2008. He has also been a member of the St. Louis Rams, Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, Denver Broncos, Seattle Seahawks and Tennessee Titans.

The 1958 Tangerine Bowl (January) was an American college football bowl game played following the 1957 season, on January 1, 1958, at the Tangerine Bowl stadium in Orlando, Florida. The game pitted the Mississippi Southern Southerners and the East Texas State Lions. It was the first of two Tangerine Bowls played in calendar year 1958.
