Charlotte Belle Emerson Keith (1865-1950) was an American painter and the founder of the Keith Country Day School in Rockford, Illinois.

Keith Country Day School is a private, fully accredited, independent, nonsectarian, college-preparatory school located in Rockford, Illinois, USA. It serves students from the preschool level to 12th grade.

Biography

Keith née Emerson was born on January 22, 1865 in Rockford, Illinois. [1] In 1895 she graduated from the School of Art at Wellesley College. [2] In 1888 she traveled to Europe where she studied with Carl von Marr in Munich, Germany, and Charles Lasar in Paris, France. [1]

Carl von Marr American artist

Carl von Marr was an American-born German painter. He was born at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of the engraver John Marr (1831–1921) and his wife Bertha Bodenstein Marr (1836–1911).

Keith exhibited her work at the Illinois State Building at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. [3] She also exhibited her work at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Milwaukee Art Museum. [1]

The World's Columbian Exposition was a world's fair held in Chicago in 1893 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival to the New World in 1492. The centerpiece of the Fair, the large water pool, represented the long voyage Columbus took to the New World. Chicago bested New York City, Washington, D.C., and St. Louis for the honor of hosting the fair. The Exposition was an influential social and cultural event and had a profound effect on architecture, sanitation, the arts, Chicago's self-image, and American industrial optimism.

The Louisiana Purchase Exposition, informally known as the St. Louis World's Fair, was an international exposition held in St. Louis, Missouri, United States, from April 30 to December 1, 1904. Local, state, and federal funds totaling $15 million were used to finance the event. More than 60 countries and 43 of the 45 American states maintained exhibition spaces at the fair, which was attended by nearly 19.7 million people.

Art Institute of Chicago art museum and school in Chicago

She married Dr. Darwin Keith in 1898. In 1907 they settled in Rockford after residing for several years in London. [1]

Keith was a member of the Rockford Art Association, and exhibited in their first show in 1913. [1]

Believing that art and culture was as important as academic studies, Keith hired a governess in 1916 to improve the education of her children beyond what they were receiving in the public school system. The group grew to include the children of family and friends. She eventually purchased some property and established the Keith Country Day School, which is still in operation. [4] [3]

Keith died on May 29, 1950 in Rockford, Illinois. [1] [5]
