Organisation and administration
The College's Senior Management Team consists of the Chancellor, the Director of Academic Programmes, the Dean of Students, the College Manager, and the Facilities Manager. There is a full complement of well-qualified academic staff, all of whom have university degrees, and many of whom hold higher qualifications. Most are highly experienced and qualified in the teaching of English as a second language.
The College also employs British university students either from the University of Kent or from Canterbury Christ Church University as Conversation Teachers. Students from Dartford Grammar School are also employed there as they have a pact of friendship with Shumei University. Their role is to socialise with the College's students by offering one-to-one conversation classes to enhance fluency in spoken English and to introduce them to various aspects of British society, typically through their own cultural and sporting interest groups. In exchange for the service they provide, Conversation Teachers receive free board and lodging at Chaucer College. They are expected to conform to the College's rules, which can appear to be quite stringent (it should, however, be noted that young people in Japan are not legally adults until the age of 20).
Academic profile
The group follows the Japanese academic year, running from April to February. During the first semester, Chaucer College welcomes Shumei University first-year students from four faculties:
- The Faculty of Management and Administration
- The Faculty of English & Information Technology
- The Faculty of Tourism and Business
- The Faculty of Teacher Education (English major)
Their programme consists of a combination of intensive study of the English language, combined with preparatory work on the subjects that will form the major component of their Shumei University degree. Teacher Education students also undertake a programme of visits to local partner schools to observe UK teaching methods. Students reside in the purpose-built accommodation on the Chaucer campus, but most include a period of homestay with a local family in their programme.
During the second semester, Chaucer, like Kingsgate, welcomes successive contingents of Shumei High School students visiting the UK. Junior high school students (age 14–15) come for two weeks, senior high school students (age 16–17) for four weeks. The latter also include a period of homestay in their programme.
During the Japanese university vacation (February–April), Chaucer hosts a four-week vacation programme for Shumei Teacher Education Faculty students whose major is not English. During this course, the students have the opportunity to visit both local and continental schools (France and Germany).
In a new venture, the College uses its considerable expertise to offer a variety of English language courses to individuals and groups seeking to improve their English and develop international exchanges at both its campuses. Courses currently last from between one and four weeks.
The University of Kent is a semi-collegiate public research university based in Kent, United Kingdom. The University was granted its Royal Charter on 4 January 1965 and the following year Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent, was formally installed as the first Chancellor.
The University of Iceland is a public research university in Reykjavík, Iceland and the country's oldest and largest institution of higher education. Founded in 1911, it has grown steadily from a small civil servants' school to a modern comprehensive university, providing instruction for about 14,000 students in twenty-five faculties. Teaching and research is conducted in social sciences, humanities, law, medicine, natural sciences, engineering and teacher education. It has a campus concentrated around Suðurgata street in central Reykjavík, with additional facilities located in nearby areas as well as in the countryside.
Thammasat University is a public research university in Thailand with campuses in Tha Phra Chan area of Phra Nakhon District near the Grand Palace in the heart of Bangkok; in Rangsit, 42 kilometers north of Bangkok; in Pattaya, a resort city on the eastern seaboard of Thailand; and in Lampang Province.
The University of Macau is the only public research university in Macau. The UM campus is located in the east of Hengqin Island, Guangdong province in Mainland China, on a piece of land leased to the Macau SAR government, but is under the jurisdiction of Macau.
Karadeniz Technical University, is a public research university in Trabzon, in the Black Sea Region of Turkey. Established in 1955, it is the fourth oldest university in Turkey. Karadeniz Technical University is a state university institution subject to the Law No. 2547 on Higher Education in Turkey. It is supported mainly by state funds allocated by the Turkish Parliament.
The Koç School is a private coeducational school in Turkey founded by Vehbi Koç, one of Turkey's wealthiest businessmen. The school comprises a high school that pioneered the IB program in Turkey and an elementary school. Prospective students gain admission into the high school based on their achievements on the nationwide examination for high schools in Turkey.
Seoul International School is a secular international private college preparatory school situated in Seongnam, South Korea offering an American curriculum in an English-only setting.
Hong Kong Shue Yan University is a private liberal-arts university in North Point, Hong Kong. Founded in 1971 as Hong Kong Shue Yan College (香港樹仁學院) by Henry Hu and Chung Chi-yung, it was unilaterally recognised as the first private university by the order of the Chief Executive on 19 December 2006.
St Clare's is a coeducational independent, international day and boarding college in North Oxford, England offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme, English language courses, University Pathways courses, Gap Year Programmes and IB teacher training workshops.
Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University is a Turkish public research university located in Çanakkale (Dardannelles) province and its surrounding towns. It is a member of the Balkan Universities Network, the European University Association (EUA), International Association of Universities (IAU), and the Thrace Universities Union. It hosted the World Universities Congress in 2010.

Temple University, Japan Campus is an international campus of Temple University. TUJ has classrooms and student facilities in Setagaya-ku, Tokyo and Kita-ku, Osaka, Japan. It is the oldest and largest foreign university in Japan, with an estimated 1,300 matriculated students, of which approximately 60% come from more than 60 countries around the world.
Chiang Mai Rajabhat University (CMRU.) is a university in the north of Thailand under the Royal Thai Ministry of Education. The university was founded in 1924 as an agricultural teacher training college. In 1948, it became Chiang Mai Teachers College and offered majors in a variety of subjects. On 14 February 1982, the year of King Rama IX's sixtieth birthday, the king proclaimed Thailand's 36 teacher's colleges to be Rajabhat Institutes. They then began offering majors and degree programmes in non-teaching fields.
Shūmei University is a private university in Japan. The main campus is located in Yachiyo, Chiba, and the headquarters is located in Nakano, Tokyo. The university was founded as the Yachiyo International University in 1988.

Muhammadiyah University of Makassar, also known as Unismuh Makassar, is a private university located in the city of Makassar, Indonesia. Unismuh is accredited 'B' based on the National Accreditation Body (BAN-PT).

Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) is a public university located in Canterbury, Kent, England. Founded as a Church of England college for teacher training in 1962, it was granted university status in 2005.
Tennessee Meiji Gakuin High School (1989–2007) was a Japanese education system boarding high school located in Sweetwater, Tennessee. The school, a part of Meiji Gakuin and affiliated with the Japanese Presbyterian institution Meiji Gakuin University, was the first accredited Japanese educational system high school in the United States. The school served grades 10 through 12. This school was an overseas branch of a Japanese private school, or a Shiritsu zaigai kyōiku shisetsu, and it occupied the former Tennessee Military Institute (TMI).
Nord University is a state university in the Nordland and Trøndelag counties of Norway. The university has 11,000 students at study locations in Northern and Central Norway, with main campuses in Bodø, the capital of the county of Nordland, and Levanger, a university town located on the south shore of the Trondheim Fjord.
