Chibeze Ezekiel (born 1979or1980) is a Ghanaian environmental activist and a 2020 Goldman Environmental Prize award recipient for Africa. [1] [2] [3] [4] He is known to have challenged the Ghanaian Ministry of Environment to cancel the construction of a coal plant through activism. [5] [6]
He is the founder of Strategic Youth Network for Development, [7] [8] a youth-centered organization for environmental and social change in Ghana. He was also the National Coordinator of 350 Ghana Reducing Our Carbon (350 GROC) [9] and he is the chairman of Youth in Natural Resource and Environmental Governance (Youth-NREG). [1] He serves as Panel Member of International Experts on the Environment of Peace 2022 (EP 2022) project. [10]
The government of Ghana in 2013 proposed the construction of a 700 MW coal power plant and an adjoining port in Aboabo in Ekumfi district. The project was proposed by the Volta River Authority and Shenzhen Energy Group: The project required a $1.5 Billion loan from China African Development Fund and it was going to be the first of a kind in Ghana which has no coal reserves, hence there would be importation of raw material annually from South Africa estimated to be about 2 million tons. Chibeze led grassroots campaign against the construction of a coal-fired power station in Ghana. He worked with the local communities educating them on the effect and damage the coal-fired power station would result to. He further requested that the government switch to renewable energy. [11] [12]
In 2022, he was a possible contender according to experts as an environmental activist for Nobel Peace Prize. [13]
He started as a certified youth trainer on climate change in 2009, and 10 years pass after all his works became a Winner of the Goldman Prize 2020 [1]

Rudolf Amenga-Etego is a Ghanaian lawyer and environmentalist. He was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2004, for his efforts in keeping water supplies affordable for the population and campaigning against the privatization of water in Ghana. The main opposition is the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund who are offering loans to the Ghanaian government to improve the water infrastructure across the country. The only drawbacks to these loans are their stipulations requiring the privatization of the water supply.

Emba Hunutlu power station is a 1320 MW coal fired power station in Turkey in Adana Province. As of 2022 it is the largest Chinese foreign direct investment in the country. Despite opposition from many environmental organisations the plant was started up in 2022 and burns Russian coal as it is cheaper than other coal. The plant is less than 2 km from another coal-fired power station, İsken Sugözü.
Çayırhan power station is a 620 MW operational coal fired power station in Turkey in Ankara Province. In 2019 land was expropriated for another lignite mine, to feed the a proposed extension, which was opposed as uneconomic and eventually had its licence revoked.
Wanjira Mathai is a Kenyan environmentalist and activist. She is Managing Director for Africa and Global Partnerships at the World Resources Institute, based in Nairobi, Kenya. In this role, she takes on global issues including deforestation and energy access. She was selected as one of the 100 Most Influential Africans by New African magazine in 2018 for her role serving as the senior advisor at the World Resources Institute, as well as for her campaign to plant more than 30 million trees through her work at the Green Belt Movement.

Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) is a youth-led advocacy group based in Ghana. It was founded in 2014 by Joshua Amponsem and Desmond Alugnoa. The group focuses on environmental sustainability and community improvement. GAYO aims is to inspire young people to participate in climate activism and foster climate leadership in Ghana. GAYO also provides environmental blogs. GAYO established the first Youth Climate Council in Africa to provide climate skills to young people when it launched the council in 2021 in Ghana.
Joshua Amponsem is a Ghanaian climate advocate and a co-founder of Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO). He is the climate specialist at the Office of the UN Secretary General's Envoy on Youth. He is the Lead Author of Adapt for Our Future, the first-ever research paper on the role of youth in advancing climate adaptation. His career has been more focused on grassroots climate and waste management solutions while advancing youth engagement in resilience building, disaster risk reduction, and climate change adaptation at the international level.
Kimiko Hirata is a Japanese climate activist. As a founder of the Kiko Network, a non-governmental organization, she has campaigned for emissions reductions for more than 20 years. As of December 2022, her grassroots work has led to the cancellation of 17 planned coal-power plants. Hirata also led landmark coal divestment campaigns against Mizuho Financial Group and Mitsubishi UFJ. She currently serves as executive director for the Tokyo-based think tank, Climate Integrate, which focuses on accelerating decarbonization.
Paul Sein Twa is a Karen environmentalist and indigenous activist from Myanmar who works to preserve the culture and environment of the Salween River basin. He co-founded the Karen Environmental and Social Action Network (KESAN) in 2001 to help Karen indigenous communities the preservation and protection of their land and heritage. He received the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2020 for his efforts.
