Chicha Press (Prensa Chicha in Spanish) is a Peruvian nickname for sensationalist tabloid newspapers that first emerged in the 1980s. [1] The etymology of Chicha Press is derived from the name for certain drinks made from corn, which later came to be used by some in Peru describe the culture of Andean migrants to the capital region of Lima during the 1960s. [2] The concept of Chicha press became a central part of the national culture in 2000 when it was popularized by Alberto Fujimori to discredit opponents of his government in the general elections of 2000.   2. Sometimes portray females in bikini / partially nude on its front page
  3. A focus on murder, rape ("crónica roja") and local showbiz ("farándula").
  4. Are designed to appeal to the less educated segment of the Peruvian population.
  5. Tabloid format (there has never been a full-size chicha newspaper).

Moisés Wolfenson Woloch is a former Peruvian congressman (2000-2001) who, together with his brother Alex, was convicted on embezzlement and conspiracy charges and sentenced on 15 February 2005 to 5 years in prison for being in charge of the "chicha press" during the government of ousted President Alberto Fujimori.

Censorship in Peru has been prevalent throughout its history. After the neoliberal economic policies implemented in the 1990s stabilized the national economy and led it to an economic boom in the 21st century, usage of TV and access to internet has vastly increased, leading to more spaces of expression.

The family is considered one of the most powerful groups in the country, due to the business conglomerate in media, mining, tourism, and banking that is under its ownership. Most notably, the family is the owner of El Comercio Group, a media conglomerate that owns the newspaper of the same name.
