The Chief Directorate: National Geo-spatial Information or CD:NGI (formerly the Chief Directorate: Surveys and Mapping or CD:SM), is the national mapping agency of South Africa. It is part of the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development. [2]

A national mapping agency is an organisation, usually publicly owned, that produces topographic maps and geographic information of a country. Some national mapping agencies also deal with cadastral matters.

The Department of Rural Development and Land Reform was, from 2009 to 2019, one of the departments of the South African government. It was responsible for topographic mapping, cadastral surveying, deeds registration, and land reform. The department fell under the responsibility of the Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform, which for most of the department's existence was Gugile Nkwinti. The department's name was commonly abbreviated DRDLR.

Land administration is the way in which the rules of land tenure are applied and made operational. Land administration, whether formal or informal, comprises an extensive range of systems and processes to administer. The processes of land administration include the transfer of rights in land from one party to another through sale, lease, loan, gift and inheritance; the regulating of land and property development; the use and conservation of the land; the gathering of revenues from the land through sales, leasing, and taxation; and the resolving of conflicts concerning the ownership and the use of land. Land administration functions may be divided into four components: Juridical, regulatory, fiscal, and information management. The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) is a department of the Government of South Africa created in June 2019 by the merger of the agriculture functions of the former Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries with the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform. The department has responsibility for agriculture, food safety, food security, land reform, topographic mapping, cadastral survey, the Deeds Offices, and spatial planning.
