The Chilean International Exhibition was a world's fair [1] held in Quinta Normal Park, [2] Santiago, between 16 September 1875 [3] and 16 January 1876 to show Chilean people recent technological and scientific advances. [2]

Organisation

The event was organised by the National Agricultural Society, opened by the president Federico Errázuriz Zañartu, [3] and originally scheduled to run until 31 December 1875, but it was extended to 16 January 1876.

Location and buildings

The fair took place on what is now the Quinta Normal Park with a central permanent palace, which is now the Chilean National Museum of Natural History). [4] There were two long buildings, which formed the machinery gallery and the Rose Innes pavilion, housing threshing machines, a restaurant and a pavilion each for Belgium and France. [4]

Foreign countries who participated were Argentina, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, France, Germany, Great Britain, Guatemala, Italy, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, Switzerland, The United States, Uruguay and Venezuela. [5]

Exhibitors included the Chilean painter Onofre Jarpa who won a medal. [6]

1929 Barcelona International Exposition

The 1929 Barcelona International Exposition was the second World Fair to be held in Barcelona, the first one being in 1888. It took place from 20 May 1929 to 15 January 1930 in Barcelona, Spain. It was held on Montjuïc, the hill overlooking the harbor, southwest of the city center, and covered an area of 118 hectares at an estimated cost of 130 million pesetas. Twenty European nations participated in the fair, including Germany, Britain, Belgium, Denmark, France, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Romania and Switzerland. In addition, private organizations from the United States and Japan participated. Hispanic American countries as well as Brazil, Portugal and the United States were represented in the Ibero-American section in Sevilla.

National Astronomical Observatory (Chile)

The National Astronomical Observatory of Chile is an astronomical observatory owned and operated by the Department of Astronomy of the University of Chile (UCh). It is located on Cerro Calán, a hill in the commune of Las Condes. The commune is an eastern suburb of Santiago located in Santiago Province of the Santiago Metropolitan Region. OAN was founded in 1852 and became a part of UCh in 1927. The facility on Cerro Calán was completed in 1962.

Quinta Normal Park

Quinta Normal Park is an urban park in the city of Santiago, Chile. The park is in a commune, or district of the same name, Quinta Normal. The park is bounded by Matucana Avenue to the east, Portales Avenue to the south and Santo Domingo Street to the north. It is home to several museums, including the Chilean National Museum of Natural History. Near the park is the Museum of Memory and Human Rights. The park is also near a public library.

Gruta de Lourdes metro station Santiago metro station

Gruta de Lourdes is an underground metro station on the Line 5 of the Santiago Metro, in Santiago, Chile. It is located close to the western branch of the Autopista Central and the Basilica of Lourdes. East of the station, Line 5 runs beneath Quinta Normal Park. The station was opened on 12 January 2010 as part of the extension of the line from Quinta Normal to Pudahuel.

Alberto Valenzuela Llanos Chilean painter

Alberto Valenzuela Llanos, was one of Chile's greatest painters and one of the four Great Chilean Masters, along with Pedro Lira, Alfredo Valenzuela Puelma and Juan Francisco González. He was a landscape painter and left an estimated 1,000 paintings. Highlights of his work include paintings of the snow-topped mountains in France and views of Paris.

Santiago Metro Line 5

Santiago Metro Line 5 is one of the six lines that currently make up the Santiago Metro network in Santiago, Chile. It has 30 stations and 30 km of track. The line intersects with Line 1 at Baquedano station and San Pablo station, with Line 2 at Santa Ana station, with the Line 3 at both Plaza de Armas station and Irarrázaval station, with Line 4 at Vicente Valdés station, and with line 6 at Ñuble station. It will also intersect and the future Line 7 at Baquedano station. Its distinctive colour on the network line map is green.

Onofre Jarpa

Onofre Jarpa Labra was a Chilean landscape painter in the Romantic style, and an essayist on various artistic topics.

National Union Movement

The National Union Movement was a Chilean political party that supported the military dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet, founded on 27 November 1983 by Andrés Allamand, Francisco Bulnes Sanfuentes, Pedro Ibáñez Ojeda and other former members and supporters of the National Party, the Radical Democracy and Christian Democrats expelled from the party. Many members of the National Union Movement occupied public offices and important positions during that regime. The referent defined itself as independent, conservative and liberal.

The National Labour Front was a rightist political party of Chile existent from 1985 to 1987, and led by Sergio Onofre Jarpa.

The National Action Party, or simply National Action, was a Chilean right-wing political party of nationalist ideology.
