Chilekwa Mumba (born 1984/1985) is a Zambian community organizer and environmental activist. [2] He is known for having organized a successful lawsuit against UK-based mining company Vedanta Resources, owner of the subsidiary Konkola Copper Mines in Zambia's Copperbelt Province, in response to pollution and environmental damage. [3] [4] [5] It was the first time that an English court decided that a British company could be held responsible for environmental harm caused by its subsidiaries operating in another country. [6] [7]

In 2023, Mumba became a recipient of the Goldman Environmental Prize. [8] [9]

Personal life

Mumba grew up in Chingola in Copperbelt Province, Zambia. His father was a miner before becoming a Pentecostal minister. [10]

As of April 2023, Mumba was running an orphanage with his wife in Lusaka, Zambia's capital. [10]

Chililabombwe is a small town in Copperbelt Province, Zambia. It is located near the Democratic Republic of the Congo border. The name Chililabombwe means 'place of the croaking frog' in the local language of Lamba. The town has a population of 87 000 based on census data from 2010, making it one of the largest towns in the Copperbelt. The town is on the T3 road, 26 km north of the neighbouring town of Chingola, and approximately 10 km south of the large border market of Kasumbalesa. It has also produced national heroes like the late soccer star Eston Mulenga and many others.

Lungowe v. Vedanta Resources plc [2019] UKSC 20 is a UK company law and English tort law case, concerning business liability for human rights violations, environmental damage and the duty of care owed by a parent company.

The Kabwe mine or Broken Hill mine is a former lead smelting and mining site near Kabwe, Zambia, that operated from 1906 to 1994. At its peak, between 1925 and 1974, it was owned by Anglo American plc and was Africa's largest lead producer. The mine produced extremely toxic lead pollution for ninety years. Several studies have confirmed that over 100,000 people near the mine, including tens of thousands of children, suffer from lead poisoning. Kabwe is one of the world's most polluted towns.
