Chris Campbell (born November 16, 1981, Mount Pleasant, Texas; died 2002) was a linebacker for the University of Miami Hurricanes football team during the 2001 season. He died at age 21 in a one-car accident in Coral Gables in 2002, a month after the National Championship game against Nebraska. [1] [2] A liberal arts major from Mount Pleasant, Texas, Campbell was slated to graduate in May 2002. He was engaged to Tombi Bell, sister of Philadelphia 76ers guard Raja Bell and daughter of UM Associate Athletic Director Roger Bell.
Campbell had been a starter for the Hurricanes at strongside linebacker since midway through the 1999 season, starting 30 consecutive games before missing the 2002 Rose Bowl after suffering an infection to his left knee following minor surgery. Campbell finished third on the team with 68 tackles in 2001. [3] Campbell was a three-year starter and provided veteran stability for Miami's young linebacker corps. A senior, he was projected as a possible NFL draft pick. [2]
