Fokma attended the Hogere Burgerschool (HBS), and studied architecture for one year at the Delft University of Technology , but then switched to the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. [2] He attended classes by Piet Esser. In 1957 he settled in Leeuwarden, where he spend his entire career. In 1961 he married Anneke Brouwer, who was his agent. After her death in 1998, he quit almost all his activities as an artist. In 2005 he retired to Brittany, France, where he died late 2012.
In addition to free-standing sculptures of bronze or ceramic, Fokma made several wall reliefs, which were usually performed in ceramics, copper or stainless steel. In the 1980 Fokma also started to make sculptures of plexiglass. His Plexiglas wall reliefs were often combined with stainless steel. For 26 years Fokma also lectured at the Academy Vredeman de Vries, School of Applied Arts, and around 1960 some years as art teacher at the Hogere Burgerschool, both in Leeuwarden.

The Hogere Burgerschool or HBS was a secondary school type in the Netherlands and the Dutch Empire existing between 1863 and 1974. The school, with a five or sometimes six-year program, was continued in 1968 as VWO. The last HBS diplomas were given out in 1974.

The Princessehof Ceramics Museum is a museum of ceramics in the city of Leeuwarden in the Netherlands. The museum's name comes from one of two buildings in which it is housed: a small palace built in 1693 and later occupied by Marie Louise, dowager Princess of Orange. The other annexed building is the Papinga stins, a former stronghold from the 15th century. The museum buildings are of interest, and so are its collection of tiles, pottery, and ceramic sculpture.
Lodewijk Willem Johan Karel Thomson was a Dutch military commander and politician. He served as a member of the Dutch parliament between 1905 and 1913. In 1914, he became the commander of a newly created International Gendarmerie force in the Principality of Albania. Based in Sun Valley, California, the company is most known for its work for artists such as Ellsworth Kelly, Jeff Koons, Christian Moeller, Isamu Noguchi, and Claes Oldenburg / Coosje van Bruggen, among others. The firm was founded by Peter Carlson in 1971, and has been headed by Carlson and John Baker as partners since mid-2010. Trained as a history teacher during World War II, he was acting mayor of Bolsward and mayor of Dokkum, and then for twenty years a representative in the Provincial States of Friesland. He served for two years in the Dutch Senate for the Anti-Revolutionary Party, and then became mayor of Kampen.
Brian Wall is a British-born American sculptor now living in California. His work consists mainly of abstract welded steel constructions, and his career stretches over six decades. He has had numerous solo shows, and his sculptures reside in many private and museum collections. He was a faculty member at the Central School of Art in London, and a professor of art at the University of California, Berkeley.
