Christian Madsbjerg is a Danish author, anthropologist, and consultant.
In his 2014 book The Moment of Clarity: Using the Human Sciences to Solve Your Toughest Business Problems (co-authored with Mikkel Rasmussen), Madsbjerg advocates that using approaches from disciplines like philosophy and anthropology are suited to analyzing corporate culture and behavior. [1] He argues that understanding shifts in consumer behavior requires the qualitative data that comes from trained human observers. This provides what they call “thick data”, which seeks the meaning of those shifts. [2] [3] [4] The concepts from the book were later adapted into an article for the Harvard Business Review entitled “An Anthropologist Walks into a Bar”. [5]
In 2016, Madsbjerg published the book Sensemaking: The Power of the Humanities in the Age of the Algorithm, [6] which uses a combination of philosophy and entrepreneurial thinking. [7] The book draws its examples from Madsbjerg's own career as well as interviews with other individuals. [8]
In 2023, Madsbjerg published the book Look: How to Pay Attention in a Distracted World, which is based on a class he taught called “Human Observation” at The New School in New York City. [9] The book includes the concept of “hyper-reflection”, what he defines as the meta-skill of learning to see how other people see. According to Madsbjerg, there are three different types of attention, and hyper reflection is the one that requires the most skill and practice. [10] In a review of the book in The Wall Street Journal , author Meghan Cox Gurdon stated that Madsbjerg “attempts to impart the wisdom he has acquired from art and philosophy and from the practical experience of running a corporate consultancy.” [9]
Madsbjerg's consultancy work was covered in the book Cultural Anthropology by Serena Nanda and Richard Warms, focusing on the use of ethnographic research in his work with Lego. [11] His work was also covered in Matthew Engelke's book How to Think Like an Anthropologist, specifically his work in the pharmaceutical industry. [12]
In 2005, Madsbjerg founded ReD Associates with Mikkel Rasmussen in Copenhagen. [13] [14] Using methodologies like ethnographic research and phenomenology, ReD Associates has been described by some as a “human science” consultancy. [15] [16]
Anthropology is the scientific study of humanity, concerned with human behavior, human biology, cultures, societies, and linguistics, in both the present and past, including past human species. Social anthropology studies patterns of behavior, while cultural anthropology studies cultural meaning, including norms and values. A portmanteau term sociocultural anthropology is commonly used today. Linguistic anthropology studies how language influences social life. Biological or physical anthropology studies the biological development of humans.
Race is a categorization of humans based on shared physical or social qualities into groups generally viewed as distinct within a given society. The term came into common usage during the 16th century, when it was used to refer to groups of various kinds, including those characterized by close kinship relations. By the 17th century, the term began to refer to physical (phenotypical) traits, and then later to national affiliations. Modern science regards race as a social construct, an identity which is assigned based on rules made by society. While partly based on physical similarities within groups, race does not have an inherent physical or biological meaning. The concept of race is foundational to racism, the belief that humans can be divided based on the superiority of one race over another.
Social science is one of the branches of science, devoted to the study of societies and the relationships among individuals within those societies. The term was formerly used to refer to the field of sociology, the original "science of society", established in the 18th century. Clifford James Geertz was an American anthropologist who is remembered mostly for his strong support for and influence on the practice of symbolic anthropology and who was considered "for three decades... the single most influential cultural anthropologist in the United States." He served until his death as professor emeritus at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton.
The behavioural sciences explore the cognitive processes within organisms and the behavioural interactions between organisms in the natural world. It involves the systematic analysis and investigation of human and animal behaviour through naturalistic observation, controlled scientific experimentation and mathematical modeling. It attempts to accomplish legitimate, objective conclusions through rigorous formulations and observation. Examples of behavioural sciences include psychology, psychobiology, criminology, anthropology, sociology, economics, and cognitive science. Generally, behavioural science primarily seeks to generalise about human behaviour as it relates to society and its impact on society as a whole.

Robert Redfield was an American anthropologist and ethnolinguist, whose ethnographic work in Tepoztlán, Mexico, is considered a landmark of Latin American ethnography. He was associated with the University of Chicago for his entire career: all of his higher education took place there, and he joined the faculty in 1927 and remained there until his death in 1958, serving as Dean of Social Sciences from 1934 to 1946. Redfield was a co-founder of the University of Chicago Committee on Social Thought, alongside other prominent Chicago professors Robert Maynard Hutchins, Frank Knight, and John UIrich Nef.

A critical theory is any approach to humanities and social philosophy that focuses on society and culture to attempt to reveal, critique, and challenge power structures. Archaeology, Anthropology, and Interstellar Communication is a 2014 collection of essays edited by Douglas Vakoch and published by NASA.
