Charles Mondry (born 1968) is an American screenwriter. [1] He is best known for co-writing the reboot of MGM's Road House (2024), starring Jake Gyllenhaal and directed by Doug Liman. And Play Dirty (2025), an adaptation of Donald Westlake's Parker series about a professional thief, starring Mark Wahlberg and LaKeith Standfield, directed by Shane Black for Amazon. The screenplay was co-written with Black and Anthony Bagarozzi. [2]
Mondry became a professional writer when he broke into the entertainment industry with a million dollar spec sale. The screenplay, entitled "Tick Tock" (co-written with Anthony Bagarozzi) [3] starred Jennifer Lopez and Samuel Jackson but was cancelled following the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. [4] He is currently co-owner of Modern Pictures, with Anthony Bagarozzi and Randi Nguyen, which produces independently financed features. [5]
Mondry has several projects in development. [6] Sony Pictures, Doc Savage , a live-action movie adaptation to be directed by Shane Black and starring Dwayne Johnson, based on the pulp serial novels of the 1930s; [7] [8] Jekyll, a modern-day reimagining of the classic Jekyll and Hyde story based on the BBC mini-series by Steven Moffat and produced by Jeff Kleeman and Ellen DeGeneres for Summit Entertainment [9] and the Cold Warrior, a project Netflix acquired from Universal Pictures in late 2017, which tells the story of a Cold War spy who is forced out of retirement to team with a younger agent to stop a terrorist threat orchestrated by Russia. Doc Savage is a fictional character of the competent man hero type, who first appeared in American pulp magazines during the 1930s and 1940s. Real name Clark Savage Jr., he is a polymathic scientist, explorer, detective, and warrior who "rights wrongs and punishes evildoers." He was created by publisher Henry W. Ralston and editor John L. Nanovic at Street & Smith Publications, with additional material contributed by the series' main writer, Lester Dent. Doc Savage stories were published under the Kenneth Robeson name. The illustrations were by Walter Baumhofer, Paul Orban, Emery Clarke, Modest Stein, and Robert G. Harris.

Play Dirty is an upcoming American crime thriller film directed by Shane Black, and starring Mark Wahlberg as Parker, a character featured in a series of novels by Donald E. Westlake under his pseudonym Richard Stark. The film is produced by Amazon MGM Studios. Black is co-writer of the screenplay alongside Charles Mondry and Anthony Bagarozzi. This is the second film adaptation of The Hunter made by MGM, after Point Blank (1967).
