1999 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election

Assembly elections was held in Maharashtra, India in two phases on September 5, 1999, and September 11, 1999. Election results were declared on October 7, 1999. The major parties were Bharatiya Janata Party - Shiv Sena (Yuti) alliance, Congress and NCP. Congress and NCP contested against each other without a pre-poll alliance but came together for a post-poll alliance to stake claim to form the government. Seats won: Congress: 75, NCP: 58. Post-poll-alliance 75+58=133/288. Shiv Sena + BJP = 69 + 56 = 125/288. Vilasrao Deshmukh of Congress became Chief Minister, and NCP's Chhagan Bhujbal became Deputy CM.

Kirti Kumar Mitesh Bunty Bhangdiya is a member of the 13th Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. He represents the Chimur Assembly Constituency. He belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was the richest candidate from Vidarbha in the 2014 elections. Bhangdiya was founder and head of "Yuvashakti Sanghatna" a political organisation that held power in the Gadchiroli Zilla Parishad in 2014. In August 2014, Bhangdiya joined the BJP. Bhangdiya's father Mitesh Bhangdiya is a member of Maharashtra Legislative Council, from the Chandrapur- Gadchiroli- Wardha local body constituency (2012-2018) who also belongs to the BJP. Mitesh Bhangdiya is amongst the leading irrigation contractors in the Vidarbha-Marathwada region.

Sanjivreddi Bapurao Bodkurwar is a member of the 13th Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. He represents the Wani Assembly Constituency. He belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Bodkurwar's victory was amongst the five seats won by the BJP, that resulted in the Indian National Congress (INC) not being able to win a single seat in Yavatmal district once its stronghold. Ranjeet Deshmukh

'Ranjeet Deshmukh, who has served as the agriculture minister in the Vilasrao Deshmukh cabinet between 1999-2004, had also held other portfolios. He had held the position as state unit president of the party on two occasions was the president of Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC). He was first elected to the MLA in 1985 from the Savner constituency.

Local elections were held in Maharashtra in four phases, to select the 4,750 members of the 192 municipal councils and 20 Nagar Panchayat. Results were announced the day after each round of voting. The first phase took place on 27 November and saw the BJP emerge as the largest party in municipal councils, winning control of 53 of the 147 councils and winning 857 of the 3,417 seats. The Indian National Congress emerged as the largest party in Nagar Panchayat elections, winning 84 of the 253 seats on 18 Nagar Panchayats.
