Château Hosanna

Château Hosanna, formerly Château Certan-Giraud, is a Bordeaux wine from the appellation Pomerol. The winery is located on the Right Bank of the Bordeaux wine region, in the commune of Pomerol in the department Gironde. As all wine produced in this appellation, Château Hosanna is unclassified, but Certan-Giraud has historically been estimated among the great crus of the region.^[1]

A Bordeaux wine is any wine produced in the Bordeaux region of southwest France. Bordeaux is centered on the city of Bordeaux, on the Garonne River. To the north of the city the Dordogne River joins the Garonne forming the broad estuary called the Gironde and covering the whole area of the Gironde department,with a total vineyard area of over 120,000 hectares, making it the largest wine growing area in France. Average vintages produce over 700 million bottles of Bordeaux wine, ranging from large quantities of everyday table wine, to some of the most expensive and prestigious wines in the world. The vast majority of wine produced in Bordeaux is red, with sweet white wines, dry whites, and rosé and sparkling wines collectively making up the remainder. Bordeaux wine is made by more than 8,500 producers or châteaux. There are 54 appellations of Bordeaux wine.

The appellation d'origine contrôlée is the French certification granted to certain French geographical indications for wines, cheeses, butters, and other agricultural products, all under the auspices of the government bureau Institut national des appellations d'origine, now called Institut national de l'origine et de la qualité (INAO). It is based on the concept of terroir.

Pomerol is a French wine-growing commune and Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) within the Libournais in Bordeaux. The wine produced here is predominately from Merlot with Cabernet Franc playing a supporting role. Unlike most other Bordeaux communes, there is no real village of Pomerol, although there is a church. The houses are set among the vineyards.

History

The property is situated south of Château Lafleur, west of Château Pétrus and north of Vieux Château Certan. Sharing its origin with Vieux Château Certan and Château Certan-de-May, the estate was once part of the original Certan property, belonging to the de May family before the French Revolution.^[2] For a period, the wine was sold as Château Certan-Marzelle, until it was acquired by the Giraud family in 1956, and was renamed Certan-Giraud.^[2]

Château Lafleur is a Bordeaux wine from the appellation Pomerol. The winery is located on the Right Bank of the Bordeaux wine region, in the commune of Pomerol in the department Gironde. As all wine produced in this appellation, Château Lafleur is unclassified, but the estate is estimated among the great growths of the region. Among the most rare and expensive wines, the wine is widely cited as one of the world's finest.

Château Pétrus is a Bordeaux, France, wine estate located in the Pomerol appellation near its eastern border to Saint-Émilion. A small estate of just 11.4 hectares, it produces a red wine entirely from Merlot grapes, and produces no second wine. The estate belongs to Jean-François Moueix and his children.

Vieux Château Certan is a Bordeaux wine from the appellation Pomerol. The winery is located on the Right Bank of the Bordeaux wine region, in the commune of Pomerol in the department Gironde. As all wine produced in this appellation, Vieux Château Certan is unclassified, but the estate is long recognised as among the great growths of the region, and by some reckoned comparable to neighbouring estate Château Pétrus.

The estate was included into the portfolio of Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix when it was acquired by Christian Moueix in 1999, at which point the Giraud family asked that the Giraud name no longer be used.^[3] Considering renaming it Château Certan, Moueix consulted with the neighboring properties also bearing the Certan name, and while the Thienponts at Vieux Château Certan had no objections, Madame Bareau-Bader of Château Certan-de-May disapproved.^[3] The property was then divided into Hosanna, and the smaller plot producing Château Certan Marzelle.

Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix, or JP Moueix, is a Bordeaux négociant house founded by Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1937, situated on the Quai du Priourat in Libourne, in the Bordeaux wine region of France. While dealing in wholesale distribution of numerous Right Bank wines, the company also acts as a bulk grape merchant, operates exclusive distribution for select châteaux, and manages its own portfolio of Pomerol and Saint-Émilion estates. The company has 120 employees.

Christian Moueix is a French winemaker and the president of the négociant house Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix in Libourne, overseeing production in several estates in Saint-Émilion and Pomerol including Château Pétrus and Château Trotanoy. He has managed the company since his father Jean-Pierre Moueix stepped down in 1978.

Production

The vineyard area extends 4.5 hectares with the grape varieties of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. The annual production averages 18,000 bottles of the Grand vin Château Hosanna.

Merlot is a dark blue-colored wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the color of the grape. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to be higher in tannin.

Cabernet Franc is one of the major black grape varieties worldwide. It is principally grown for blending with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in the Bordeaux style, but can also be vinified alone, as in the Loire's Chinon. In addition to being used in blends and produced as a varietal in Canada and the United States, it is sometimes made into ice wine in those regions.

This separated 2 hectare vineyard produces a wine of 100% Merlot. The annual production is typically 10,000 bottles.
