Citizens National Bank was founded on July 11, 1890, at 4th and Main Streets in Laurel, Maryland as Citizens National Bank of Laurel. [1] [2] The bank's founder and first president was Charles H. Stanley. [3] Barnes Compton is also identified as a founder and early director of the bank. [4] On April 1, 1965, it was renamed to Citizens National Bank after merging with The Central Bank of Howard County. [1] [5]
On January 3, 1977, Citizens National Bank acquired Belair National Bank. [6] [2]
On September 15, 2007, Citizens National was acquired by PNC Bank and the original building renamed as its "Laurel Main Street Branch". [1] [2]
Laurel is a city in Maryland, United States, located midway between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore on the banks of the Patuxent River. While the city limits are entirely in northern Prince George's County, outlying developments extend into Anne Arundel, Montgomery and Howard counties. Founded as a mill town in the early 19th century, Laurel expanded local industry and was later able to become an early commuter town for Washington and Baltimore workers following the arrival of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1835. Largely residential today, the city maintains a historic district centered on its Main Street, highlighting its industrial past.

The current incarnation of the company was formed by a 2019 merger between the former TCF, which was established in 1923 in Wayzata, Minnesota, and the Michigan-based Chemical Financial Corporation. In December 2020, TCF announced a merger with Huntington Bancshares. It was announced on May 26, 2021, that TCF Bank will be required by the Department of Justice to sell off 13 branches in Michigan. These branches were purchased by Horizon Bank at the end of the third quarter. The final approval has been given for the merger and the merger was complete on June 9, 2021. The combined bank has $175 billion in assets.
Mr. Compton was one of the incorporators, in 1890, of the Citizens' National Bank in Laurel, and had been a director in it since that year.
