City Independents

The City Independents are a political party based in Stoke-on-Trent, England. Formed in 2004, they regularly stand candidates for election to Stoke-on-Trent City Council. [1]

Following the results of the 2015 election, the City Independents formed an administration with the support of the Conservatives and UKIP, with City Independents leader, Ann James, becoming Leader of the council. [2] In the aftermath of the 2019 election, the City Independents would form a second administration with the Conservatives, this time as a junior partner, with Ann James moving to Deputy Leader of the council.

The second administration continued until September 2020, when it collapsed following a cabinet shuffle that saw the remaining two City Independent cabinet members removed from their posts. The group's remaining 6 councillors then sat in opposition to the minority Conservative administration. [3] [4]

In the 2023 elections, the group lost five of the six seats with only Lilian Dodd retaining her seat. [5]

Stoke-on-Trent City Council is the local authority of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England. As a unitary authority, it has the combined powers of a county council and district council and is administratively separate from the rest of Staffordshire.

Mark Joseph Meredith was the second and last directly elected mayor of Stoke-on-Trent in England. An openly gay man and former amateur boxer he was elected on 5 May 2005, for the Labour Party, and defeated incumbent independent Mike Wolfe. In March 2009, Meredith was arrested on suspicion of corruption in office, but was never charged. He returned to the City Council as a Councillor for the Birches Head and Central Forest Park ward at the 2011 local elections serving until his defeat in 2015. On 8 May it was confirmed that he had not been re-elected for his ward for another term of office and had been replaced by a candidate of the City Independent group in Stoke-on-Trent.

Elections to the Borough Council in Slough, England, were held on 1 May 2008. This was the 123rd Slough general local authority election since Slough became a local government unit in 1863.

An election to Staffordshire County Council took place on 2 May 2013 as part of the 2013 United Kingdom local elections. 62 electoral divisions returned one county councillor each by first-past-the-post voting for a four-year term of office. Following a boundary review, new electoral division boundaries were established for this election. No elections were held in Stoke-on-Trent, which is a unitary authority outside the area covered by the County Council. The council continues to be administered on the Leader and Cabinet model.

The 2017 Scottish local elections were held on Thursday 4 May, in all 32 local authorities. The SNP retained its position as the largest party in terms of votes and councillors, despite suffering minor losses. The Conservatives made gains and displaced Labour as the second largest party, while the Liberal Democrats suffered a net loss of councillors despite increasing their share of the vote. Minor parties and independents polled well; and independent councillors retained majority control over the three island councils. For the first time since the local government reforms in 1995, all mainland councils fell under no overall control.
