Grand Forks is a city in and the county seat of Grand Forks County,North Dakota,United States. The city's population was 59,166 as of the 2020 census,making it the third-most populous city in the state,after Fargo and Bismarck. Grand Forks,along with its twin city of East Grand Forks,Minnesota,forms the center of the Grand Forks metropolitan statistical area,which is often called Greater Grand Forks or the Grand Cities.
The Red River,also called the Red River of the North to differentiate it from the Red River in the south of the continent,is a river in the north-central United States and central Canada. Originating at the confluence of the Bois de Sioux and Otter Tail rivers between the U.S. states of Minnesota and North Dakota,it flows northward through the Red River Valley,forming most of the border of Minnesota and North Dakota and continuing into Manitoba. The Red River flood of 1997 was a major flood that occurred in April and May 1997 along the Red River of the North in Minnesota,North Dakota,and southern Manitoba. It was the most severe flood of the river since 1826. The flood reached throughout the Red River Valley,affecting the cities of Fargo and Winnipeg,but none so greatly as Grand Forks and East Grand Forks,where floodwaters reached more than 3 miles (4.8 km) inland. They inundated virtually everything in the twin communities. Total damages for the Red River region were US$3.5 billion. The flood was the result of abundant snowfall and extreme temperatures.

SS Princess was a steamboat that operated on Lake Winnipeg in Canada from 1881 until 1906. The vessel was built in Winnipeg,Manitoba by the Jarvis &Burridge shipyard,and it was regarded as the pride of Lake Winnipeg and as the finest lake steamer west from the Great Lakes and east from the Rocky Mountains. The vessel has a total of 40 spacious passenger cabins,and outwardly it resembled many of the Mississippi River paddle steamers. The vessel had a top speed of approximately 25 knots.
The Manitoba-Dakota League was an independent baseball league based in Manitoba and North Dakota that was founded in 1950. It became the home for many African-American and Latino players. The league lasted through the 1957 season. It was known informally as the Mandak League or Man-Dak League. The T.J. Potter was a paddle steamer that operated in the Northwestern United States. The boat was launched in 1888. Her upper cabins came from the steamboat Wide West. This required some modification,because the T.J. Potter was a side-wheeler,whereas the Wide West had been a stern-wheeler. The boat's first owner was the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company. The T. J. Potter was one of the few side-wheeler boats that operated on the Columbia River.

In a short career of six years,Shoalwater was renamedFenix,Franklin,and Minnie Holmes. Shoalwater was the first steamboat in Oregon to suffer a boiler explosion,although no fatalities resulted.

Mascot was a sternwheel-driven steamboat built in 1890 which operated primarily on a route running from Portland,Oregon down the Willamette and Columbia rivers to points on the Lewis and Lake rivers. Points served included the town of Woodland,Washington,on the main branch of the Lewis,and La Center,Washington on the east fork.
Chief Commissioner was a Hudson's Bay Company propeller driven steamship intended for operation on the Saskatchewan River. She was launched in May,1872,in Fort Garry. However,her draft was too deep,and for her three years of operation,she provided service on Lake Winnipeg. She was retired in 1875,with her components cannibalized and used in other vessels.
