Clem Goonan (born 18 June 1939) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). [1]

Goonan played his early football at Whorouly and won the Ovens & King Football League's best and fairest award in 1958. [2] [3] Although approached by four VFL clubs, Goonan next played for Myrtleford. [3] [4] He was cleared to South Melbourne in 1961, where he remained until 1964, with most of his 50 appearances coming as a defender or ruck-rover. [3] [5]

Relocated to northern Victoria through his work as a police officer, Goonan joined the Albury Football Club. [3] A knee injury cost him a spot in Albury's 1966 premiership team. [4]

He later spent four years as captain-coach of Rutherglen. [3]

He was inducted into the Ovens & King Football League Hall of Fame in 2006.

Australian rules football in New South Wales

Australian rules football has been played in New South Wales continuously since the 1870s, though for much of the 20th century it was a minor sport compared to the rugby football codes and association football. There are strongholds in the Riverina, Broken Hill/Barrier region, the far south coast and a small but strong presence in the Newcastle and Hunter region. Among many of the state's population less familiar with the sport, particularly in Sydney, people refer to it as "AFL" as this is the name that is prmomoted by the governing body the Australian Football League.

Ovens & Murray Football Netball League

The Ovens and Murray Football Netball League (O&MFNL) is an Australian rules football and netball competition containing ten clubs based in north-eastern Victoria, the southern Riverina region of New South Wales and the Ovens and Murray area. The name comes from the Ovens River, the river in the part of north-eastern Victoria covered by the league, and the Murray River, which separates Victoria and New South Wales.

North Albury Football Club

The North Albury Football Netball Club, nicknamed the Hoppers, is an Australian rules football and netball club playing in the Ovens & Murray Football League (O&MFL). They are incorporated as part of the North Albury Sports Club licensed club at Bunton Park in North Albury, Albury, where they play their home matches. The club has won six O&MFL premierships. The Hoppers currently play in forest green guernseys with a gold vee and the "Hopper" logo on the right side. Previous guernsey designs included a dark green and gold design similar to the West Coast Eagles' classic wingtip design and a gold design with two dark green vees over the yoke. The club song is a version of "Join in the Chorus" with some words altered from the AFL Kangaroos version.

Leigh Newton is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). A ruckman, Newton played 13 matches for Melbourne in his first season at the club, 1997. He was struck down by injuries the next two seasons, which resulted in him not playing a senior match. Melbourne delisted Newton at the end of 1999.
