Climate change affects the environment of Jersey in various ways.
In 2021, annual emissions of greenhouse gases amounted to 358,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. [1]
Milder winters have led to the food sources of hedgehogs being available across the year so hibernation is less necessary. [2] Hedgehogs would be more likely to have parasites and so would be more likely to forage in the winter months. [2]
In 2021, the electricity supply for the island had already been mostly decarbonised. [3]
The Paris Agreement was extended to the Bailiwick of Jersey in 2022. [4]
In 2023, the minister for energy and climate change said that the task remained "huge" and that the targets were extremely ambitious, but that they could be achieved if everyone worked together. [5] In 2024, the environment minister said that Jersey was making good progress towards reaching net zero by 2050. [6]
In 2023, Jersey maintained its commitments to reducing emissions and its targets in doing so, even as Rishi Sunak watered down pledges relating to electric vehicles. [7]
