History

On October 20, 1580 the government of the city of La Trinidad and the port of Buen Ayre, headed by Juan de Garay, received an insignia sent to it by the crown for their approval.[ citation needed ] It depicted an eagle which was unfortunately looking to the left (the right of the observer), which in heraldry suggests "illegitimacy"[ citation needed ] . There was another error, in that the crown was royal (which is supposed to be reserved for the highest nobility).[ citation needed ] Perhaps because of the presumed distaste of heraldry experts, the insignia was not approved until September 20, 1596, and fell out of use quite quickly.[ citation needed ]

On November 29, 2012, the Buenos Aires City Legislature passed a bill that modified and restored the original format of the insignia. The new symbol is a refined version of the coat of arms approved on July 7, 1856 by the City Council of Buenos Aires which received final approval by Order of December 3, 1923. It is an oval with the image of the Río de la Plata, two ships symbolizing the two foundations of the City, and a white dove with its wings spread over the sky. [2] [3] [4] [5]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Coat of arms of Argentina</span> Coat of arms of Argentina

The coat of arms of the Argentine Republic or Argentine shield was established in its current form in 1944, but has its origins in the seal of the General Constituent Assembly of 1813. It is supposed that it was chosen quickly because of the existence of a decree signed on February 22 sealed with the symbol. The first mention of it in a public document dates to March 12 of that same year, in which it is stated that the seal had to be used by the executive power, that is, the second triumvirate. On April 13 the National Assembly coined the new silver and gold coins, each with the seal of the assembly on the reverse, and on April 27 the coat of arms became a national emblem. Although the coat of arms is not currently shown on flags, the Buenos Aires-born military leader Manuel Belgrano ordered to paint it over the flag he gave to the city of San Salvador de Jujuy, and during the Argentine War of Independence most flags had the coat of arms.
