In software engineering, code ownership is a term used to describe control of an individual software developer or a development team over source code modifications of a module or a product. [1]
While the term is very popular, there is no universally accepted definition of it. Koana et al., in their 2024 literature review, found 28 different definitions, [2] and classified them as follows:
Some researchers also use the term to describe the authorship of software (identifying who wrote a particular line of software). Koana et al. state that this is a different, although related, meaning, as the code owner might not be original author of the software piece. [3]
It is generally accepted that the lack of clear code ownership (usually in the form of many developers freely applying small changes to a shared piece of code) is causing errors to be introduced. At the same time, with no code owner, the knowledge about an artifact can be lost. This is confirmed by large-scale studies, for example, involving Windows 7 and Windows Vista. [6]
Modern version control systems allow explicit designation of code owners for particular files or directories (cf. GitHub CODEOWNERS feature). Typically, the code owner is either receiving notifications for all the changes in the owned code or is required to approve each change. [7]

A programming tool or software development tool is a computer program that software developers use to create, debug, maintain, or otherwise support other programs and applications. The term usually refers to relatively simple programs, that can be combined to accomplish a task, much as one might use multiple hands to fix a physical object. Release notes are documents that are distributed with software products or hardware products, sometimes when the product is still in the development or test state. For products that have already been in use by clients, the release note is delivered to the customer when an update is released. Another abbreviation for Release notes is Changelog or Release logs or Software changes or Revision historyUpdates or README file. However, in some cases, the release notes and changelog are published separately. This split is for clarity and differentiation of feature-highlights from bugs, change requests (CRs) or improvements on the other side.

The LGTM platform leverages the CodeQL query engine to perform semantic analysis on software code bases. GitHub aims to integrate Semmle technology to provide continuous vulnerability detection services. In November 2019, use of CodeQL was made free for research and open source. CodeQL either shares a direct pedigree with .QL (dot-que-ell), which derives from the Datalog family tree, or is an evolution of similar technology.
Azure DevOps Server, formerly known as Team Foundation Server (TFS) and Visual Studio Team System (VSTS), is a Microsoft product that provides version control, reporting, requirements management, project management, automated builds, testing and release management capabilities. It covers the entire application lifecycle and enables DevOps capabilities. Azure DevOps can be used as a back-end to numerous integrated development environments (IDEs) but is tailored for Microsoft Visual Studio and Eclipse on all platforms.

Heroku is a cloud platform as a service (PaaS) supporting several programming languages. As one of the first cloud platforms, Heroku has been in development since June 2007, when it supported only the Ruby programming language, but now also supports Java, Node.js, Scala, Clojure, Python, PHP, and Go. For this reason, Heroku is said to be a polyglot platform as it has features for a developer to build, run and scale applications in a similar manner across most of these languages. Heroku was acquired by Salesforce in 2010 for $212 million.
Bountysource was a crowdsourcing website for open source bounties and since 2012 also for crowdfunding. Users could pledge money for tasks using micropayment services that open-source software developers can pick up and solve to earn the money. It also allowed large-scale fundraising for big improvements on the project. It integrated with GitHub using its bug tracker to check if the problem is resolved and connect the resolution with GitHub's pull request system to identify the patch. When the users agree that they are satisfied and the project maintainer merged the proposed changes to the source-code, Bountysource would transfer the money acting as a trustee during the whole process.

Gitea can be hosted on all platforms supported by Go including Linux, macOS, and Windows. The project is funded on Open Collective.
A software bot is a type of software agent in the service of software project management and software engineering. A software bot has an identity and potentially personified aspects in order to serve their stakeholders. Software bots often compose software services and provide an alternative user interface, which is sometimes, but not necessarily conversational.
