The University of Louisville Louis D. Brandeis School of Law,commonly referred to as The University of Louisville School of Law or the Brandeis School of Law,is the law school of the University of Louisville. Established in 1846,it is the oldest law school in Kentucky and the fifth oldest in the country in continuous operation. The law school is named after Justice Louis Dembitz Brandeis,who served on the Supreme Court of the United States and was the school's patron. James Joseph "Jim" Tomkovicz is an American educator and legal scholar. He was a professor of law at the University of Iowa College of Law from 1982 until 2021,when he retired from Iowa. While at Iowa he was awarded a chaired professorship,being named the Edward F. Howrey Professor of Law. After his four decades at Iowa,he was appointed Dean’s Professor at the Emory University School of Law for two years,an appointment which ended in 2023. Tomkovicz regularly taught Criminal Procedure,Criminal Law,and Evidence. He authored a number of scholarly works,almost all devoted to constitutional criminal procedure topics. During his career he also authored six amicus curiae briefs in the Supreme Court of the United States in cases raising criminal procedure issues. The cases included Knowles v. Iowa,Florida v. J.L.,Maryland v. Blake,Kyllo v. United States,United States v. Patane and Arizona v. Gant. Tomkovicz was on the winning side in 4 of the 5 cases decided by the Justices. One case (Blake) was dismissed by the Court after oral argument.

Katz is a lawyer by profession who has been active in local and national government and politics for many years. He has been a member of the Democratic National Committee where he helped draft the party's platform for the 2008 Democratic National Convention. Ambassador Katz holds a B.A. from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and a J.D. from the American University Washington College of Law in Washington D.C. He was raised in a Jewish family in St. Louis,the son of Fred and Eileen Katz. His father escaped Nazi Germany for the United States where he worked as a salesman;and was one of the original founders of the St. Louis Holocaust Museum.
