Colin Maiden Park is a New Zealand sports complex in the Auckland suburb of Glen Innes, about 10 kilometres south-east of the Auckland CBD. [1] It is named in honour of Sir Colin Maiden, vice-chancellor of the University of Auckland from 1971 to 1994.
There are three cricket grounds and other sporting facilities in the park. The main ground, which has a capacity of 4,000, is the home of University RFC and Auckland University CC, and is one of the home grounds for the Auckland cricket team. The main cricket ground began to be used for first-class cricket in 1999, and as of November 2023 it has staged 29 of Auckland's first-class and 20 of Auckland's one-day matches. Auckland played the final of the Ford Trophy there in 2009–10 and 2014–15. [2]
In 2014 the Auckland council took over the park as part of a condition of sale between the University and the Council. The purchase ensures the 20-hectare parkland and sports field complex remain in public ownership. [3]
Eden Park is a sports venue in Auckland, New Zealand. It is located three kilometres southwest of the Auckland CBD, on the boundary between the suburbs of Mount Eden and Kingsland. The main stadium has a nominal capacity of 50,000, and is sometimes referred to as New Zealand's national stadium. Te Hopua a Rangi, also known as Gloucester Park, is one of the volcanoes in the Auckland volcanic field in Auckland, New Zealand, and is located in Onehunga. Its 300 m wide, sediment-filled explosion (maar) crater was used as a boat harbour in early European times and known first as Onehunga Basin then as Geddes Basin. It was reclaimed in the 1930s and named Gloucester Park in 1935 after the visit to New Zealand by the Duke of Gloucester in that year. From 1975 into the early 1980s the Southwestern Motorway was built right through the middle of the park and crater. The southern side was turned into a sports ground, and the western side as a wetland with activity space for Aotea Sea Scouts who took ownership of the Manukau Yacht and Motor Boat Club (MYMBC) club house in 1977.
Blandford Park, in Auckland, New Zealand, was the home of association football in Auckland for much of the 20th century, and one of the country's main football grounds. Located in Grafton Gully, northeast of Grafton Bridge, roughly between the northern part of Whitaker Place and the Auckland Bowls Club in Grafton Mews, it was razed in the mid-1960s, and its site is now occupied by on- and off-ramps to the Auckland Central Motorway Junction.
