Colourblocks is a British animated television series for preschoolers that debuted on CBeebies on 12 September 2022. [1] The series follows the adventures of block characters in Colourland, [2] each one named after a colour. [3] Together with the series Alphablocks and Numberblocks it is a part of the "Blocks Universe". [1] Commissioned by the British Broadcasting Corporation, the programme was created by Joe Elliot and David Bowman, and produced by Alphablocks Ltd. with Blue Zoo Animation Studio. [1] [4]

Contents

Two seasons have been produced. As of 2024, the series was scheduled for production up to 2027, per an agreement between the Alphablocks Ltd. and Blue Zoo, and BBC. [4]

Premise

The programme aims to teach children about colours. Colour mixing is represented by characters bumping into each other to produce a new character of the resulting colour. A particular object representative of its colour is associated with each character. While being themed on colours, characters also have different shapes so that colour blind children would be able to distinguish between them. [5]

Political colour Colours used to represent a political ideology, movement or party

Political colours are colours used to represent a political ideology, movement or party, either officially or unofficially. They represent the intersection of colour symbolism and political symbolism. Politicians making public appearances will often identify themselves by wearing rosettes, flowers, ties or ribbons in the colour of their political party. Parties in different countries with similar ideologies sometimes use similar colours. As an example the colour red symbolises left-wing ideologies in many countries, while the colour blue is often used for conservatism, the colour yellow is most commonly associated with liberalism and right-libertarianism, and Green politics is named after the ideology's political colour. The political associations of a given colour vary from country to country, and there are exceptions to the general trends, for example red has historically been associated with Christianity, but over time gained association with leftist politics, while the United States differs from other countries in that conservatism is associated with red and liberalism with blue. Mass media has driven a standardisation of colour by political party, to simplify messaging, while historically the colour a candidate chose to identify with could have been chosen based on other factors such as family or regional variations.

Color theory, or more specifically traditional color theory, is a historical body of knowledge describing the behavior of colors, namely in color mixing, color contrast effects, color harmony, color schemes and color symbolism. Modern color theory is generally referred to as color science. While there is no clear distinction in scope, traditional color theory tends to be more subjective and have artistic applications, while color science tends to be more objective and have functional applications, such as in chemistry, astronomy or color reproduction. Color theory dates back at least as far as Aristotle's treatise On Colors. A formalization of "color theory" began in the 18th century, initially within a partisan controversy over Isaac Newton's theory of color and the nature of primary colors. By the end of the 19th century, a schism had formed between traditional color theory and color science.
