The South Carolina Ballet is a professional ballet company in Columbia, South Carolina. Formerly known as Columbia City Ballet, the company has established itself as a significant cultural institution in the region. [1]

History

South Carolina Ballet, formerly The Columbia City Ballet, was founded in 1961 by Ann Brodie, [2] a former dancer with the Radio City Music Hall Ballet. [3] The company was rebranded as South Carolina Ballet in 2023 to reflect its statewide focus. [4] The South Carolina Ballet presents four to five full-length productions and two unique Educational Outreach productions each season. William Starrett is the current Artistic Director. [5]

The South Carolina Ballet tours each year in Savannah, Georgia, Charleston, SC, as well as eight other cities around the region. The South Carolina Ballet has also given tours in Chicago, Charlotte, and around Florida.

Notable Productions

One of South Carolina Ballet's most ambitious projects is "Off the Wall and Onto the Stage: Dancing the Art of Jonathan Green," which premiered on February 5, 2005. [5] Choreographed by Artistic Director William Starrett, the ballet brings Jonathan Green's paintings of Gullah life to the stage. With a budget of $1.25 million, the production featured vibrant costumes and a diverse cast, receiving acclaim as a major cultural event in South Carolina. It highlighted the company's commitment to artistic innovation and cultural representation. [5]

Moscow Ballet has toured the United States and Canada during the holiday season since 1993 and is exclusively represented by Talmi Entertainment Inc for these tours. There are 70 to 80 Russian-trained classical dancers on the annual North American tour who fly in from the former republic of Russia. Stanislav Vlasov, a former principal artist of the Bolshoi Ballet, was the first artistic director on the North American tour in 1993. Vlasov's debut in the United States was at Carnegie Hall in 1957.

Carolina Ballet is one of America's arts organizations, programming traditional ballets and new works by contemporary choreographers. In 2019, Zalman Raffael became the Artistic Director/CEO joined by Michele Weathers as executive director. For more than 20 years, Carolina Ballet has garnered critical praise from the national and international media, staged over 100 world premiere ballets, and in 2018, chartered the School of Carolina Ballet. The Kansas City Ballet (KCB) is a professional ballet company based in Kansas City, Missouri. The company was founded in 1957 by Russian expatriate Tatiana Dokoudovska. The KCB presents five major performances each season to include an annual production of The Nutcracker. The KCB, its school, and its staff are all housed in, operate from, and rehearse at the Todd Bolender Center for Dance and Creativity, a renovated, seven-studio, office, and rehearsal facility in Kansas City, Missouri, that opened in August 2011. The company performs at and is the resident ballet company at the nearby Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, a performance venue in downtown Kansas City that opened in September 2011.

Greensboro Ballet is a professional ballet company in North Carolina. It is the only ballet company in the Piedmont Triad. It is one of the few non-profit ballet companies in North Carolina. Greensboro Ballet has presented works by George Balanchine. The company also has performed a number of works made especially for the Greensboro Ballet by Rick McCullough, Jill Eathorne Bahr, Leslie Jane Pessemier, Elissa Minet Fuchs, and Emery LeCrone. <i>Gullah Gullah Island</i> American childrens television series

Gullah Gullah Island is an American musical children's television series aired on the Nick Jr. block from October 24, 1994, to March 7, 2000. The show was hosted by Ron Daise – the former vice president for Creative Education at Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina until 2023 – and his wife Natalie Daise, both of whom also served as cultural advisors, and were inspired by the Gullah culture of Ron Daise's home of St. Helena Island, South Carolina, part of the Sea Islands.
