Columbia City Council

The Columbia City Council is the lawmaking body of the city of Columbia, Missouri. It has seven elected members, including the Mayor of Columbia. Each member represents one of the city's six wards, except the mayor who is elected by city-wide vote. Council members are elected for three-year terms. Elections are held annually, as the terms are staggered. [1]

In addition to lawmaking, the main duties of the council include hiring a city manager and appointing citizens to boards and commissions; of which there are 57 as of 2019. [2] The council members receive a stipend; however, there is ongoing debate over making members full-time city employees. [3]

The council meets in Columbia's City Hall, also known as the Daniel Boone Building.

Membership

The most recent municipal election was April 5, 2022. Incumbent Mayor Brian Treece announced he would not seek re-election for a third term. [4] Columbia Sustainability Manager Barbara Buffaloe became mayor, receiving 42.9% of the vote against Randy Minchew, David Seamon and two minor candidates. [5] Since 2022, De'Carlon Seewood has served as city manager, hired by the council. [6]

During much of the time between the two stints as a legislator, he served as an associate circuit judge on the 13th Circuit Court of Missouri. Brian Treece is an American politician who was the Mayor of Columbia, Missouri, serving two consecutive terms in office from 2016–2022. Before becoming mayor Treece was chairman of the Downtown Leadership Council and served on the city's Historic Preservation Commission. He and his wife Mary Phillips founded the lobbying firm TreecePhillips in Jefferson City, Missouri. In 2011, they married at their home in Columbia. In the 2016 municipal election he defeated lawyer Skip Walther. In the April 2, 2019 mayoral election he defeated former Missouri State Representative Chris Kelly. He was an advocate for transparency in government and called for a city-wide audit. Treece announced the hiring of Columbia's newest city manager John Glascock on July 15, 2019. He has described himself as a "fiscal conservative." As Mayor, he served as chair of the Columbia City Council. He did not seek reelection in the 2022 election.

The 2023 Chicago mayoral election was held on February 28, 2023, to elect the mayor of Chicago, Illinois. With no candidate receiving a majority of votes in the initial round of the election, a runoff election was held on April 4. This two-round election took place alongside other 2023 Chicago elections, including races for City Council, city clerk, city treasurer, and police district councils. The election was officially nonpartisan, with winner Brandon Johnson being elected to a four-year term which began on May 15.
