Comic Republic is a Nigerian online multimedia company that primarily focuses on the digital distribution of indigenously created comic books. The company features African people, locales and mythology in much of its published body of work, although this is not an explicitly stated focus of the company. [1]
On 23 November 2016, Comic Republic was featured as an African Startup by CNN. [2] In 2021, Comic Republic signed a deal to produce a film adaptation of their comic Ireti. [3]
Guardian Prime, created by Jide Martin and Wale Awelenje, was proposed as one of three flagship characters for the at-the-time unnamed venture. He briefly appeared for the first time in comic strips attached to movie schedule flyers in Nigerian cinemas. Subsequently, he appeared in Might Of Guardian Prime Issue 1, which was produced by: Jide Martin, Michael Balogun, and the Ezeogu brothers (Ozo and Tobe). [4] Jide Martin, in an interview with The Guardian , said of his motivation to create the character: "I saw that Nigeria was filled with so much negativity. This hero [was] designed to give us faith to see that our actions and words could indeed make a difference and throw a positive light on Nigeria to a global audience". [5]
