Mission and Purpose
The Community Alliance for Jewish-Affiliated Cemeteries (CAJAC) represents a centralized model of cemetery management, utilizing economies of scale and utilizing common standards - and best practices - to ensure permanent preservation of sacred burial grounds.
Presently, CAJAC is managing 10 burial grounds, representing nearly 8000 graves. CAJAC's work includes managing both independent cemeteries as well as dissolved burial lodges.
CAJAC continues to spearhead restoration projects. As of 2024, Central NJ, Suffolk County, NY, and the Capital District of New York. Previously, CAJAC completed comprehensive restorations at Baron Hirsch Cemetery in Staten Island, NY and Bayside Cemetery in Queens, NY.
CAJAC also deploys a rapid response team when vandalism occurs at Jewish cemeteries.
CAJAC also partners with other organizations, including the Jewish Community Legacy Project, to assist synagogues with succession planning as it relates to their cemeteries.
CAJAC's Rabbinic Advisor is Rabbi Elchonon Zohn, preeminent authority on end-of-life issues, and Executive Director of the National Association of Chevros Kadisha
CAJAC's Current Portfolio
CAJAC manages cemeteries and fraternal burial organizations throughout Metropolitan New York. Organizations include: Brisker Society, Brooklyn Jewish Postal Workers Society, Kingsbridge Heights Jewish Center, Beth Israel, Workmen's Circle, Van Liew and Cemetery (Jewish section). CAJAC maintains nearly 8000 graves across all of its cemeteries.
CAJAC is presently managing the restoration and repair of six cemeteries Rotterdam, NY, resulting from a large-scale desecration in April 2024. The organization is partnering with the local community, including three area congregations, to raise the funding necessary to effectuate the restoration.
Staff and Leadership
CAJAC's Executive Director is Rabbi Andrew Schultz. The current president is Alan Friedman.
CAJAC is also affiliated with the New York Board of Rabbis and Plaza Jewish Memorial Chapel.
Funding
Since its inception, CAJAC has been a beneficiary of UJA-Federation of New York. CAJAC is also funded by private donors and foundations. In addition, CAJAC receives management fees from its constituent cemeteries and burial societies.
History
The organization was incorporated as Friends of Bayside Cemetery on September 22, 2006. [1] It officially changed its name to Community Association for Jewish At-risk Cemeteries on April 13, 2007. [1] The organization officially changed its name again to Community Alliance for Jewish-affiliated Cemeteries on August 11, 2014. [1] . CAJAC changed its name to the Community Alliance for Jewish-Affiliated Cemeteries in 2014.
Bayside Cemetery Restoration
Starting with seed money from the UJA Federation of New York, CAJAC completed a massive restoration maintenance program at Bayside Cemetery in Queens, New York. In addition to UJA-Federation's support, CAJAC raised an additional $150,000, including funding from the New York City Council.
The history of Jews in St Louis goes back to at least 1807. St. Louis has the largest Jewish population in Missouri and is the largest urban area in the state of Missouri. Today's Jewish community is primarily composed of the descendants of Jews who immigrated from Germany in the first few decades of the 19th century, as well as Jews who came from Eastern Europe slightly later.
Jacob Joseph served as chief rabbi of New York City's Association of American Orthodox Hebrew Congregations, a federation of Eastern European Jewish synagogues, from 1888 until his death in 1902. Born in Krozhe, a province of Kovno, he studied in the Nevyozer Kloiz under Rabbi Yisrael Salanter and in the Volozhin yeshiva under the Netziv. Bayside Cemetery is a Jewish cemetery at 80-35 Pitkin Avenue in Ozone Park, Queens, New York City. It covers about 12 acres (4.9 ha) and has about 35,000 interments. It is bordered on the east by Acacia Cemetery, on the north by Liberty Avenue, on the west by Mokom Sholom Cemetery, and on the south by Pitkin Avenue.
The Jewish Federation (JFED) is a secular Jewish non-profit organization found within many metropolitan areas across the United States with a significant Jewish community. They provide supportive and human services, philanthropy, financial grants to refugees around the world, humanitarian and disaster relief, host leadership conferences and fellowship opportunities for women and youth, charitable drives, help those in need navigate comprehensive resources, and provide outreach to at-risk Jewish populations in 70 countries worldwide, and more. While the Jewish Federation was created to primarily service Jewish communities, they also provide for other communities. All federations in North America operate an annual central campaign, then allocate the proceeds to affiliated local agencies. There are currently 146 Jewish Federations, the national umbrella organization for the federations is the Jewish Federations of North America, in the United States.
The United Jewish Appeal (UJA) was a Jewish philanthropic umbrella organization that existed from its creation in 1939 until it was folded into the United Jewish Communities, which was formed from the 1999 merger of United Jewish Appeal (UJA), Council of Jewish Federations and United Israel Appeal, Inc. In 2009, United Jewish Communities changed its name to The Jewish Federations of North America.

El Centro de Estudios Judíos “Torat Emet” is a Spanish-language Jewish education and spirituality center for Jews from all over Latin America. Its mission is to provide traditional Sephardic Torah study using the traditional perspectives of the Spanish and Portuguese communities customs and rites in Spanish for Latin American audiences. Much of the work of the center focuses on the return of the Bnei Anusim - descendants of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews that were forcibly converted to Christianity during the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisitions. John S. Ruskay, is executive vice president emeritus of UJA-Federation of New York and a senior partner of JRB Consulting Services. He served as a commissioner of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom from May 2016 to May 2018. Ruskay is an author and lecturer on issues affecting the Jewish people.

Congregation Shaare Zedek Cemetery was a small Jewish cemetery located on the south side of East 88th Street between Fourth and Madison Avenues on the Upper East Side in Manhattan, and owned by Congregation Shaare Zedek on the Lower East Side. It opened in about 1847 on a lot that was just over 50 feet wide by 100 feet deep, and was filled to capacity by 1859.
