The Community Union Defence League (CUDL) is an Australian mutual aid group which operates under the principles of Marxism-Leninism and is guided by the Australian Communist Party. [1]
CUDL currently operates in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, and Coffs Harbour, [1] where their weekly street kitchens hand out over 200 meals.
In November 2020, a street kitchen was started by CUDL in Coffs Harbour, in response to the significant homeless community in the area. [2]
In August 2021, CUDL Adelaide were approached by SA's Department of Human Services, and told they would need to relocate their weekly street kitchen to a different part of the city. [3] The Australian Communist Party, and the state Labor opposition questioned the visit from the DHS representative constituted a conflict of interest, after it was found the chief executive also had ties to a pub nearby Whitmore Square. [4]
In September 2021, members of Victoria Police and representatives from the City of Melbourne approached the street kitchen run by CUDL in Melbourne, and ordered them to remove their furniture. CUDL representatives stated they had turned out every week for 2 years, and police were looking for an excuse to shut them down.[ citation needed ]

Adelaide Oval is a sports ground in Adelaide, South Australia, located in the parklands between the city centre and North Adelaide. Woolgoolga is a town on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, Australia. It is on the Pacific Highway, approximately 550 km north of Sydney and 365 km south of Brisbane. The closest city to Woolgoolga is Coffs Harbour, which lies 25.8 km to the south. Woolgoolga has two beaches on the Pacific Ocean. The area has long been a centre of banana growing in New South Wales, but this industry has declined in the face of competition from Queensland. Recent times have seen many banana plantations replaced by blueberries after banana sales slumped in the late 1990s.

Sam Leach is an Australian contemporary artist. He was born in Adelaide, South Australia. Leach worked for many years in the Australian Tax Office after completion of a degree in Economics. He also completed a Diploma of Art, Bachelor of Fine Art degree and a Master of Fine Art degree at RMIT in Melbourne, Victoria. Leach currently resides in Melbourne. Leach's work has been exhibited in several museum shows including "Optimism" at the Queensland Art Gallery and "Neo Goth" at the University of Queensland Art Museum in 2008, in 2009 "the Shilo Project" at the Ian Potter Museum of Art and "Horror Come Darkness" at the Macquarie University Art Gallery and "Still" at Hawkesbury Regional Gallery in 2010. His work is held in public collections of regional galleries of Geelong, Gold Coast, Coffs Harbour, Newcastle and Gippsland and the collections of La Trobe University and the University of Queensland.
