Human identification by forensic scientists can be done by three primary methods: friction ridge analysis, DNA analysis, and comparative dental analysis, the latter of which is one of the duties of a forensic odontologist. It is the process of identification by a post-mortem dental examination of a deceased individual (or individuals); comparing those findings with the ante-mortem dental records, radiographs, study casts, and so on believed to be those of the individual (or individuals) implicated; and assessing the concordance and/or discrepancy between the two. Teeth are resilient and—along with the highly specific and unique type, location, and configuration of restorations—might be the only features usable for the identification of bodies found in burnt, decomposed, skeletonised, or macerated condition.[ citation needed ]

Methodology

The appointed forensic odontologist notes down all dental findings in a post-mortem intra-oral examination. It can also include taking dental radiographs and/or photographs wherever possible. Ante-mortem dental records are provided (by the police) of the suspected missing person/persons. The forensic odontologist then compares the post-mortem dental findings with those of the ante-mortem records and gives a conclusion on the established identification in the form of a dental report. This dental report can be further taken into evidence to either confirm identification or to present in court in criminal cases.[ citation needed ]

Cedric Keith Simpson was an English forensic pathologist. He was Professor of Forensic Medicine in the University of London at Guy's Hospital, Lecturer in Forensic Medicine at the University of Oxford and a founding member and President of the Association of Forensic Medicine. Simpson became renowned for his post-mortems on high-profile murder cases, including the 1949 Acid Bath Murders committed by John George Haigh and the murder of gangster George Cornell, who was shot dead by Ronnie Kray in 1966.

Tricho–dento–osseous syndrome (TDO) is a rare, systemic, autosomal dominant genetic disorder that causes defects in hair, teeth, and bones respectively. This disease is present at birth. TDO has been shown to occur in areas of close geographic proximity and within families; most recent documented cases are in Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. The cause of this disease is a mutation in the DLX3 gene, which controls hair follicle differentiation and induction of bone formation. All patients with TDO have two co-existing conditions called enamel hypoplasia and taurodontism in which the abnormal growth patterns of the teeth result in severe external and internal defects. The hair defects are characterized as being rough, course, with profuse shedding. Hair is curly and kinky at infancy but later straightens. Dental defects are characterized by dark-yellow/brownish colored teeth, thin and/or possibly pitted enamel, that is malformed. The teeth can also look normal in color, but also have a physical impression of extreme fragility and thinness in appearance. Additionally, severe underbites where the top and bottom teeth fail to correctly align may be present; it is common for the affected individual to have a larger, more pronounced lower jaw and longer bones. The physical deformities that TDO causes become more noticeable with age, and emotional support for the family as well as the affected individual is frequently recommended. Adequate treatment for TDO is a team based approach, mostly involving physical therapists, dentists, and oromaxillofacial surgeons. Genetic counseling is also recommended.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Forensic radiology</span>

Forensic radiology is the discipline which comprises the performance, interpretation and reportage of the radiological examinations and procedures which are needed in court procedures or law enforcement. Radiological methods are widely used in identification, age estimation and establishing cause of death. Comparison of ante mortem and post mortem radiographs is one of the means of identification. The scanning of baggage, vehicles and individuals have many applications.

Disaster victim identification (DVI) is the process of identifying the remains of people who have died in a mass fatality incident such as a plane crash or bomb blast. The process can be time-consuming to avoid mis-identification. Techniques include fingerprinting, use of dental records and DNA profiling.
