The Competition and Consumer Authority (CCA) is the regulatory agency for market competition in Botswana.

History

Botswana Competition Authority (2011–2019)

The Botswana Competition Authority (BCA) was established in 2011 by the Botswana Competition Act. [1] The regulations granting the BCA its powers came into effect on 14 October 2011. [2]

In April 2016, Tebelelo Pule was appointed temporary Chief Executive, succeeding Thula Kaira. [3] This appointment was made permanent in October 2017. [3]

In 2018, Botswana enacted the Competition Act. [4]

Competition and Consumer Authority (2019–present)

On 2 December 2019, the BCA absorbed the functions of the Consumer Affairs department of the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry, becoming the Competition and Consumer Authority (CCA). [5]

Botswana Country in Southern Africa

Botswana, officially the Republic of Botswana, is a landlocked country in Southern Africa. Botswana is topographically flat, with up to 70 percent of its territory being the Kalahari Desert. It is bordered by South Africa to the south and southeast, Namibia to the west and north, and Zimbabwe to the northeast. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is a competition regulator in Australia. It is a regulatory commission of the Australian Government, under the Treasury. It was established in 1995 with the amalgamation of the Australian Trade Practices Commission and the Prices Surveillance Authority to administer the Trade Practices Act 1974, which was renamed the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 on 1 January 2011. Its mandate is to protect consumer rights and business rights and obligations, to perform industry regulation and price monitoring, and to prevent illegal anti-competitive behaviour.

Air Botswana Corporation is Botswana's state-owned national flag carrier, with its headquarters located in Gaborone. It operates scheduled domestic and regional flights from its main base at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport. Air Botswana has been loss-making for several years, and there have been various attempts to privatise the company, and frequent changes to the corporation's management and board, so far without reducing the losses.

Botswana Defence Force

The Botswana Defence Force, the military of Botswana, was formed in 1977. The commander-in-chief is Mokgweetsi Masisi. The main force is the army; there is also an air wing and a riverine patrol contingent attached to the ground forces, with 10 Panther airboats and 2 Boston Whaler Raider class.

Botswana national cricket team

The Botswana national cricket team is the team that represents the Republic of Botswana in international cricket. They have been an associate member of the International Cricket Council since 2005, after previously being an affiliate member since 2001 and an associate member in 2017. They are in Division Five of the World Cricket League and are ranked at joint 29th in the world by the International Cricket Council (ICC), the 5th-highest ranked non-test team in the African region. The team's coach is former Kenyan ODI player Joseph Angara, who was appointed in July 2015.

Mompati Merafhe

Mompati Sebogodi Merafhe was a Botswana politician who was Vice-President of Botswana from 2008 to 2012. He was a retired Lieutenant-General and served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1994 to 2008.

Linah Mohohlo Botswana banker

Linah Kelebogile Mohohlo was a Botswana banker and university chancellor. She was the Governor of the Bank of Botswana from 1999 to 2016. She was also the first female Chancellor of the University of Botswana, serving from 2017 to 2021.

Ian Khama Motswana politician

Seretse Khama Ian Khama is a Motswana politician and former military officer who was the fourth President of the Republic of Botswana from 1 April 2008 to 1 April 2018. After serving as Commander of the Botswana Defence Force, he entered politics and was Vice-President of Botswana from 1998 to 2008, then succeeded Festus Mogae as President on 1 April 2008. He won a full term in the 2009 election and was re-elected in October 2014.

Margaret Nasha

Margaret Nnananyana Nasha is a Botswana politician who served as the Speaker of the National Assembly from 2009 to 2014. She was the first woman to hold the position.

Prostitution in Botswana is not illegal, but laws such as public disorder, vagrancy, loitering and state recognised religious provisions are used to prosecute prostitutes. Related activities such as soliciting and brothel keeping are illegal. Botswana has made proposals to make prostitution legal to prevent the spread of AIDS. However, there has been mass opposition to it by the Catholic Church. Prostitution is widespread and takes place on the street, bars, hotels, brothels and the cabs of long-distance trucks.

Capital punishment in Botswana is usually issued for murder under aggravated circumstances and is carried out by hanging. There is on average one execution per year, and the execution usually takes place some years after the trial. One execution was carried out in 2016, two in 2018, and one in 2019.

Mahalapye Railway Highlanders are a football club in the Botswana Premier League who play home games in Molepolole, but are based out of Mahalapye.

Mascom Wireless Proprietary Limited, is a Botswana mobile telecommunications company. Its head office is in Gaborone. It was established in Gaborone, Botswana in February 17, 1998.

Mokgweetsi Masisi 5th and current president of Botswana

Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi is the fifth and current President of Botswana. He served as the 8th Vice President of Botswana from November 12, 2014 to April 1, 2018. He was a Member of Parliament in the National Assembly for the Moshupa-Manyana constituency from 2009 to 2018.

Botswana at the 2016 Summer Paralympics Sporting event delegation

Botswana sent a delegation to compete at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 7 to 18 September 2016. This was the country's second time competing at a Summer Paralympic Games after making its debut at the 2004 Summer Paralympics. Botswana was represented by one athlete, Keatlaretese Mabote, a short-distance sprinter. He competed in one event, the men's 400 metres T12 competition, where he was eliminated in the heat stages because he was third in his heat and only the top two participants in a heat progressed to the semi-finals.

The Botswana Chess Championship is organized by the Botswana Chess Federation, which was founded in 1982.

Botswana Fibre Networks (BOFINET) is the wholesale provider of national and international telecommunication infrastructure in Botswana formed formed in 2012 to focus on and improve the backbone network and internet infrastructure of Botswana.
